John Francis Stokes

On Monday, August 5, 2019, John Stokes, loving husband and father, passed away at the age of 67. John was born January 2, 1952 in Rochester, MN to Lloyd and Elaine Stokes. John graduated from Mayo High School and received his degree in electrical engineering from the University of Minnesota.

Anyone who knew John, knows that this quiet and reserved man was full of heart. He dedicated himself to the happiness of those surrounding him and knew what was important in life- the people (and dogs) you live it with! John was a family man who dreamed of having grandchildren, saving childhood toys in the hopes that one day his dream would come true. Albeit the time to enjoy was too short, John’s dream was realized when he became a grandfather to two granddaughters. He gave them the gift of unconditional love, and his memory will live on strong with them.

John spent many summer days boating with his wife, family, and friends on the Mississippi River. He loved to drive his cabin cruiser wide open, standing with arms outstretched, one foot on the wheel. He and his beloved dog, Olive, ran the beaches together, playing fetch and swimming for countless hours.

In his last days, John was surrounded by loved ones sharing stories; a recurring theme shown through. John was a selfless man, staying true to others until the very end.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou; his two daughters, Bonnie (Eric) and Sara (Luke); two granddaughters, Gwen and Ayla; his brother, Tom; sisters Connie and Rita; and his dog Olive. John is preceded in death by his father, Lloyd; his mother, Elaine; and stepfather, Bill.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Animal Humane Society of Golden Valley, Minnesota and the American Lung Association.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 10, 2019 at the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home in Rochester, MN. Celebration of life and refreshments to follow at the Rochester Eagles Club at 3:00 p.m.

Mary Lou and family,

I am so sorry for your loss. I remember days of boating with you all and his kind and gentle spirit. He put up with a lot of crazy girls on the boat but did it with such grace and always a smile on his face. It was evident that he was there to make sure we had a good time--a true selfless man. My heart hurts for you and the hole that is left, it's not fair. You are dearly loved, holding you close in prayer in this next season of life. John and his tender heart will be greatly missed. Much love. xoxo
