John D. “Jack” Kelly
Rochester – John D. (Jack) Kelly age 88, passed away on Thursday, October 21, 2010 at his home in Rochester.
A Funeral Mass will be held for Jack at St. Pius X Catholic Church on Monday, October 25, 2010 at 11:00AM with the Rev. Paul Nelson presiding. A luncheon will be held in the church hall immediately following the Mass. Following a short luncheon, the burial will take place at St.Theodore’s Cemetery in Albert Lea, Minnesota with military honors provided by the American Legion. A visitation will be held on Sunday, October 24, 2010 from 2:00-4:00PM at Macken Funeral Home, with a prayer service at 3:45PM. You may also visit at the church one hour prior to the service on Monday.
Jack was born May 7, 1922 in Albert Lea and graduated from Albert Lea High School in1940. He studied electrical engineering at Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis. He enlisted in the Navy Air Corps in 1942 and flew Naval Air Transport Services in the Pacific arena. On September 11, 1945, he married his high school sweetheart, Jean Redfern, at the Mission Delores in San Francisco, California. After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Jack and Jean lived in various places while Jack worked for IBM from 1948 to 1987.
Jack was a member of the American Legion and the Golden K Kiwanis. He was active with the Boy Scouts and enjoyed traveling, golf, sports, reading and private flying.
Jack is survived by his wife Jean of 65 years, and his 3 sons; Bill (Zoe Ann) of Raleigh, North Carolina, Bob (Marcia) of Boulder, Colorado, and Tom (Ellen) of Rochester; 6 grandchildren and 1 great-granddaughter. Jack was preceded in death by his sister Mary Clare Yanish.
In lieu of sending flowers, memorials are suggested to a favorite charity, the Golden K Kiwanis, or to Seasons Hospice at 1811 Greenview Place SW, Suite 110, Rochester, MN 55902.
