Jerome “Jerry” Thomas Brown

Jerome “Jerry” Thomas Brown, age 85, died Friday, February 23, 2018 at Rochester East Health Services.

Jerry was born with his twin brother, John, on January 27, 1933 at St. Marys Hospital to Homer and Luella (Kvaall) Brown. He grew up in Lanesboro and graduated from Lanesboro High School in 1952.

Jerry enlisted in United States Air Force in August 1952 and served for four years in Texas, Wyoming, Utah, Arkansas, Europe and North Africa. He was honorably discharged in August 1956 then returned to Minnesota and married Shirley Hilden on March 6, 1957 at The Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple resided in Rochester where he worked for Gopher Aviation in the aircraft parts department for six years. They moved to Newark, Ohio in 1964 where he worked for the Columbus Dispatch. They returned to Minnesota in 1966. Jerry worked for the St. Paul Dispatch as a Circulation Supervisor for six months. In November of 1966, he went to work for the United States Postal Service as a Letter Carrier for the next 26 years; retiring in 1992. The couple moved back to Rochester in 1998.

Jerry was a 50-year member of the National Association of Letter Carriers; a life member of VFW, The American Legion, and The Forty and Eight. He enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing, horse racing, and casino gambling.

Jerome is survived by his wife, Shirley of Rochester; a brother, Richard (Brenda) of Thornville, Ohio; two nieces, Anna (Ned) Waters of Orlando, Florida, and Valerie (Jeff) Coe of Rochester, Minnesota; and two nephews, Michael Brown of Fayetteville, Arkansas, and Shawn (Tammy) Brown of Newark, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his parents, twin brother, half-brother, and step-sister.

Memorial Gathering will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 1, 2018 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home. Burial will take place at a later date in Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Preston, Minnesota.
