Jeanette M. “Jeanie” Monahan – Rochester
In loving memory of Jeanette Mary (Hanzel) Monahan, 98, of Rochester, MN, who passed away with her husband of 74 years “Jerry” by her side on Monday, January 6, 2025, at The Waters on Mayowood Drive.
Jeanette was born July 15, 1926 in Faribault, MN to Francis and Charlotte (Bolton) Hanzel. She graduated from Faribault High School in 1944, the Mankato Teachers College in 1946 and then taught grade school in Zumbrota, MN. On August 12, 1950, she married Jerome M. Monahan at Sacred Heart Church in Faribault. The couple moved to St. Paul, MN, where she taught at St Joseph’s School in W. St. Paul before moving to Rochester in 1956.
Jeanette loved family, a good book, flower gardening, playing bridge and baking pies (famously apple & pumpkin). She opened the Wise Owl Shop (a secondhand consignment store) on North Broadway in the 1970s. She was a founding member of the Friends of Mayowood Residence & Historic Sites; in 2010 they received the Stewardship Award from the Rochester Heritage Preservation Committee for the preservation of Mayowood and other historic sites in Rochester, building a legacy that will benefit generations to come.
She is survived by her husband Jerome; sons, Michael (Marie Rosengren) of Longmont, CO, Thomas (Amy Hawks) of Stillwater, MN, Timothy (Lesleigh) of Lakewood, CO, and Daniel (Ann) of Woodland, MN; daughter Patricia (Thomas) McMullen of Buffalo, MN; thirteen grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. She famously greeted her grandchildren with “So, what have you done for fun lately?”. She was preceded in death by her parents, five sisters and two brothers.

Condolences
The family of Jeanette “Jeanie” Monahan has received the following condolences.
Dear Jerry & Family,
I have great memories of your wife and mother Jeanie from our years living on 16th Ave with you and beyond. I always remember her kindness and engaging smile when I would see her in the neighborhood or various events. And Jerry, over all the years we’ve known each other you always greeted me with such sincere warmth that I appreciated and admired very much.
Your family is in my prayers. As you mourn the loss of your wonderful wife and mother I trust you will be comforted by the countless great memories you have of her.
Jeannie was one of the first friends I made after I moved to Rochester and we remained best friends over our lifetime. She was a bit older than me and having no relatives in town I always turned to her for advice about anything, especially about my kids. She was a great mother to her kids and she always had the answer for me when I needed it. We both loved to play bridge and we became bridge friends too. When Friends of Mayowood was formed by her and her friends she got me involved in that. We spent countless hours over the years working on the Christmas tours at Mayowood which raised much needed money for the house especially in the beginning years. Our husbands became great friends and we did so many fun things together over the years. Our trip to Germany together in 1976 left us with so many special memories. Jeannie was truly a great lady and will be missed by many. The way she lived her life she has earned a special place in Heaven. She will forever be in my heart.
I am so sorry for your loss of such a wonderful person. To you and the rest of your family, my condolences.
My sympathy to Jerry and all the members of the Monahan Family. Special Person/Special Family. God Bless.
