Jareth E. Messmer
At 58 years of age, Jareth Messmer has joined his family and friends in heaven as he has gone on to his next life. After a short stay at Rochester Methodist Hospital, he passed away on March 26, 2012 due to chronic myelomonocytic leukemia.
Jareth was born in the peaceful beauty of southwest North Dakota, in the town of Regent on October 12, 1953 to Leonard and Katherine (Klein) Messmer. At the early age of two months old, the family moved from Regent to Rochester, Minnesota. He attended St. Francis Grade School and graduated from Mayo High School in 1972. He began his working career as a paper carrier in Rochester in the Southport area, and continued working at Michael’s Restaurant, Minnesota Highway Department, Mayo Clinic, St. Mary’s, and Custom Printing until their closing in 2007. He referred to himself as semi-retired, but continued helping family and friends whenever they needed help on projects.
Jareth was united in marriage to the love of his life, Marilyn Kruger, on September 20, 1975 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Rochester. Over the years they have lived in Rochester and Stewartville. In 1986 they had the opportunity to move to a small hobby farm south of Rochester where they enjoyed raising (his) miniature horses and (her) Morgan horses. During the years they attended both Nascar and local auto races in support of friends and family who were racing at the local tracks. Jareth was a crew member of his brother-in-law’s K1 Mini Sprint Team. Over the years they enjoyed many trips to Northern Wisconsin and Northern Minnesota for snowmobiling with family and friends, along with riding in southeast Minnesota. Jareth enjoyed taking many trips to attend auctions with friends and family. He took great pride in keeping his lawn looking the best it could be. It was a standing joke in the neighborhood that he was always out working on the lawn and riding his John Deere tractor or on his 4-wheeler. He was a member of the Minnesota Snowmobiler Club and American Morgan Horse Association.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn of 37 years; mother, Katherine Messmer of Rochester; two brothers, James (Marlene) Messmer and Joel (Shari) Messmer of Rochester; sister, Janise (Kevin) Serwa of Eden Prairie, MN; sister-in-law, Karen Messmer; nine nephews and nieces, Brandon, Nathan, Rochelle, Christina, Deanna, Ryan, Cortney, Michael and Mackenzie; six great nephews and nieces, Elysia, Luke, Ethen, Aubrie, Ayden and Bergen. He was preceded in death by his father Leonard, and a brother Jerald.
A funeral service is scheduled for 11:00AM, Friday, March 30, 2012 in River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home, officiated by Rev. Shawn Haremza. Visitation will be from 5:00-8:00PM Thursday, March 29 in the River Park Chapel and also one hour prior to the service on Friday.
Jareth has requested to be cremated following the funeral and his ashes be spread at a later date by family members. One of Jareth’s favorite quotes was, “Remember me with smiles and laughter, for that is how I’ll remember you all. If you can only remember me with tears, then don’t remember me at all.”
Condolences
The family of Jareth E. Messmer has received the following condolences.
Dear Messmer Family,
Please accept my sincere condolence for the loss of your dear loved one Jareth. Even though I never had the opportunity to get to know him personally, the death of a loved one is something I have experienced and it hurts. What has given me comfort during times such as these is knowing that our Heavenly Father understands our pain more than anyone else and cares very deeply for us.(Psalms 34:18) He has lovingly promised to reunite us with our dead loved ones in the very near future by means of a resurrection right here on earth in paradise conditions that will be filled with peace, happiness, and perfect health for everyone.(Acts 24:15; Psalms 37:9-11,29;Isaiah 33:24) May this precious hope, along with loving memories of Jareth, bring you a measure of comfort during this most difficult time. Rest assured that God will do all that He has promised.(Hebrews 6:18) My deepest sympathy to you.
I was so shocked to hear about Jareth. He was a happy-fun loving cousin. My memories of Jareth are when he and his family would come to North Dakota during the summer. We would spend hours swinging on the swing in the barn hay loft. We always had so much fun. My deepest condolences to all of you.
Kathy

You are in my thoughts and prayers, Marilyn. You shared a lot of wonderful memories so be thankful for those. May God's love embrace you at this difficult time. Lean on your friends and family.
I worked in Neurology for 17 years (left in 2000) so that is where I met you, Marilyn. But I also knew Jerry and Karen and Shari and Joel (Shari babysat my oldest daughter 24 years ago!). So when I hear Messmer, I always think of your family fondly.
With sympathy, Sally Busse
It is with heavy heart that we acknowledge that our friend and best neighbor ever in the whole world, Jareth, has left this world at such a young age. He will never be forgotten!
Jareth, you will always be missed and yes some tears have been shed but we also will always remember you with smiles and laughter; how could we not? When we read about your perfect lawn and the John Deere, we were reminded and we totally agreed about your perfection; you took such pride in your homestead.
We also have memories of a special snowmobiling trip to WI to see us that we'll never forget; I think we got lost!
We were truly blessed when you and Marilyn purchased that little hobby farm and became the kind of neighbors everyone should be so lucky to have. Thanks for all you did for us; we appreciate you guys more than you'll ever know.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you, Marilyn, and family. We wish we would have been able to come for Jareth's Celebration of Life Service.
Your friends and past neighbors,
Bill and Jan Schliem
So sorry to hear about Jareth.

You all must be so proud to have Jareth as part of your family. I remember seeing him a few years back when visiting family in Rochester, and he was the same as always, great big smile on his face and such a warm nature. Its impossible to think of those young years in Southport and not think of the Messmer clan. Such a happy group. Not to crazy about how hard they tackled the girls in football....but thats what I get for playing with boys. The future may be hard without him, but what wonderful memories you must have of this very very nice man.
Im going to miss my friend, who always had time for me. Ill always remember Jerry , I just wish I would have pressed myself harder to stay in contact with my friend.
When I first heard the news that Jareth was ill, followed by the news that he died, I was sad. Yet I had to smile. I smiled remembering all those crazy things that we did in our neighborhood-growing up. Playing softball with my dad, and having fun playing games after dark. Running around, going to the creek and being kids. In the same grade at St. Frances, and at Mayo High School, it was so nice to always have a friend on the playground and a smiling face as we passed in the hall. I smiled remembering that if I hung out at the mailbox at a certain time each day, he would be driving by on his bike to drop off the paper and I could get a smile and a "Hey Brenda" and I would return, "Hey Jareth, how's it going?" and his reply would always be the same,"Going good!" Jareth makes my heart smile because he was not just a classmate, not just a cousin, but he was a friend and a good person, with kind heart and kind spirit. That kind spirit will be with us always as we morn and remember. I am sorry that i wasn't able to be there to share the story telling and remembering all the good times we had together as kids growing up in southport. But please know that I am thinking about you. As family and friends gather to share and to comfort one another, remember to smile as he is smiling in our hearts! God Bless!! Brenda, Don and family
