Jane M. Toddie

Jane Mary Toddie, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully on May 7, 2024 at Mayo Clinic Hospital Saint Marys Campus at the age of 89, surrounded by her family who loved her dearly.

Jane was born on August 26, 1934 in Hastings, MN, to Michael and Berdina Rother. She graduated from Hastings High School in 1952, earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the College of Saint Teresa in Winona, MN in 1956, and earned her Masters in Healthcare Administration from University of St. Francis, Joliet IL in 1988. She married Robert E. Toddie on July 28, 1956 in Hastings MN. Other than a short stint in California, Jane and Bob lived in Rochester in their Kutzky Park home since 1959.

Jane worked from 1958-1995 at Saint Marys Hospital/Mayo Clinic. She was the Director of the Saint Marys School of Practical Nursing for over 20 years until the school closed in 1995. Her students were all special to her and the skilled nurses she helped produce and inspire are one of her legacies.

Jane lived a life filled with love, faith, humor, and unwavering strength. A faithful member of St Pius X Church for over 66 years, she was known for her warm smile and quick wit leaving a lasting impression on everyone she met. She was an avid golf and tennis player and loved her Minnesota sports teams.

Throughout her life, Jane was a devoted mother, pouring her heart and soul into raising her children with boundless love, direction, and encouragement. Her children and grandchildren were her greatest source of pride and joy. She imparted in them the love of animals, travel, and learning.

Jane will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy of love, compassion, and strength will live on in the hearts of those she leaves behind.

She is survived by her soulmate of over 70 years, Robert (Bob) Toddie; children Terese (Randy) Horlocker, MD, Jay (Marlys) Toddie, Lynn (James) Splittstoesser, PhD, Laura (Rodney) Spading, DVM; grandchildren Mark (Ashley) Horlocker, Sister Agnes Horlocker, Thomas Splittstoesser, Justin Toddie, Daniel Splittstoesser and Jane Spading; great grandchildren Brynlee and Branston Horlocker. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sisters Evelyn Rother, Donald Rother, Florian Rother, Harold Rother and Elizabeth McCoy.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:00 PM on Wednesday, May 15 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, Rochester, MN, Fr Jim Starasinich officiating. Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 at The River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service on Wednesday, May 15, 2024.

What a great woman and teacher.  I even babysat her kids a few times!

I’m so sorry for your loss.

Laura,

So sorry to hear of your families loss. For years I talked to your mom on the phone almost everyday for a few minutes. She always was so happy and kind. I will always remember when she pinched me at your surprise birthday party, it still makes me laugh. She touched lot of lives. Please know I am thinking of all of you.

Tom

Terry and Laura, I am sorry for your loss of your beloved mother Jane.  Be taking especially good care of yourselves as this new normal unfolds.

With shared love,

Jerry Porter

Jane was an amazing teacher! Her enthusiasm made you want to be a nurse, a good nurse!105 She taught us so much about not just nursing, but life in general. I will never forget her! RIP Jane

Mrs. Toddie was my science teacher in 1965-66 at St Mary's School of Practical Nursing. She was a great teacher and could relate to the students better than the nuns and older nursing instructors. Deepest sympathy to her family.

I am sorry for the passing of Jane.  I had the opportunity to meet and work with Jane at St. Marys Hospital and recall her being part of the "heart" of the hospital.  I am sure she touched a lot of lives and her impact on others is deep, wide, and enduring.  May her friends and family reflect warmly upon her life and legacy.

Family of Jane, My sincere sympathy, thoughts and prayers to Jane and each of you! My fondest memory of Jane is her fun leadership as the Director of the St. Marys Licensed Practical Nursing Program. I was honored to be one of her nursing instructors in that program the last couple of years before the program came to an end. The graduates of the program were amongst the highest quality healthcare providers, bringing their intellect and caring of the ill in the hospital setting in a very cost effective manner. I tribute that to Jane's leadership along with teaching the Catholic faith beliefs. I remember her attending daily Mass and as she understood bringing her the strength and guidance to carry out her role.  May she in her eternal home watch over healthcare!

May she rest in peace. Marilyn Baker

Bob & family- I am very sorry for your loss. The last few month that I got to know Jane, her wit & sense of humor was so wonderful.

Bob, I could see the love & care you have for Jane, cherish the memories. Take comfort in knowing she is strong, no pain & dancing with Jesus.

Blessings, Cathy

From the class at ST Mary’s School of Practical Nursing 1974-75 she was the most wonderful engaging instructor out there. She worked so beautifully among all of our Nun Instructors. She is definitely among the angels in the heavens. Blessed be her memory!
