Jim J Flury, 70, of Rochester went to his heavenly home Monday April 15, 2013 surrounded by his loving family at their residence after a lengthy battle with Lymphoma and Acute Mylogenous Leukemia. Jim regarded his medical team of Dr.’s Thomas Witzig, Aaron Mansfield, and Robin Klebig NP, as caring members of his own family.
Jim was born on Oct. 3, 1942 in Marion Township to Ernest and Hattie (McCaleb) Flury. He graduated from John Marshall High School in 1960. Jim married his high school sweetheart and the love of his life Karen (Campbell) Flury on July 9, 1966.
Jim’s dedication and lifelong career involved working in the grocery industry. He began his career at National Tea Co. in October 1959 and then joined Barlow Foods of Rochester in 1970, where he served for 30 years in a variety of management roles including 3 years at Barlow’s Miracle Mart in Bismarck ND from 1997 thru 2000. He then worked for 10 years with Coborn’s Cashwise Inc. as the store manager in Austin, MN and concluded his career as an advisor at the Eyota Market in Eyota, MN. Jim was an active member of both the National Grocer’s Association and the MN Grocer’s Association and served on the Board of Directors for 8 years.
Jim was a lifetime member of the Marion Church of Christ where he served for many years as a member of the church board while also serving as an active volunteer and member for several community organizations. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge – Pleasant Grove for 45 years, the Odd Fellows Lodge for 20 years, the Elks Lodge, and was an active member of Rotary Club 2 of Rochester, Austin, MN, and of Bismarck-Mandan North Dakota.
Jim will be forever remembered for his ready smile, enthusiastic handshake, quick witted sense of humor, spontaneous one liners, his love for sports including his unwavering commitment to the MN Vikings and MN Twins. His phenomenal work ethic was an inspiration to all who knew him. He was a fan of corvettes and treasured the memories of his ‘63 split window coupe.
He is survived by his wife Karen and his daughters Rainie (Rick) Flury Tufty, and Lynette (Shane) Lacey. The joys of his life included his four grandchildren, Kadie Ketchum, Kolton Tufty, Abbe and Kylie Lacey as well as step grandchildren Chad (Brandy) Tufty and Heather (Tufty) & Mike Kuhn and great grandchild Ocean Kuhn. Condolences
The family of James Joyce Flury has received the following condolences.
I'm so sorry for your loss. My family had deep ties with Jim and Barlow Foods. I was the last of six children to work at Barlow's and know Jim. In the four years I worked at Barlow Foods, Jim only got on my case twice. Once on a Sunday about not wearing the proper shoes, and once about stocking and unloading the grocery semi. The second event he apologized for the next day and I told him "You were doing your job and I was doing mine we just didn't understand each other at the moment." He will be greatly missed.
Flury Family,
We are so sorry for your loss. Are Prayers are with you all. Jim fought a tough fight.

Flury Family,
Rich and I both worked with Jim at Barlows. He was so dedicated to the store. We have some wonderful memories of Jim.
Rich was able to make it to the service last night but was unable to stay long enough to get through the line to give you our condolences. I was planning on attending the service today but I am the only one in the office today. You are all in our hearts and prayers. I watched my Mom die slowly and has relieved to have her return to God's arms and be at peace. I hated to see her go but I hated even more to see her suffer so. I believe that Jim will watch over you just like my Mom watches over me.
May you find peace and comfort in all your family and friends.
Sincerely,
Barb
Karen and family, You have our deepest sympathy. Jim was a really wonderful guy and will be dearly missed. He had such a positive attitude through his years of battle with cancer. I'm so glad I was at my mom's the day he came and visited her. My mom told me that he was the best boss she ever had! Treasure your memories, no one can take that away from you. He is now in Gods loving arms. Some day you will be reunited in Gods kingdom. God Bless.
I remember in grade school Jim said that you should live each that the Lord was coming for supper. A wise man. Prayers are sent your way. My brother John has always kept in close touch with Jim & the rest of Marion School guys. They will miss him each & every time they meet for coffee.
Karen,
I was sorry to hear of Jim's passing. He put up a long fight but has gone to be with his heavenly father now. We haven't kept in touch over the years but always felt you and Jim were and are special people. I wanted to be at the funeral but the weather is not cooperating. I live in South Dakota and it is snowing and blowing here today. You and your family will be in my prayers on Friday. Gods blessing on you all.
Barb
My deepest sympathies are with you and your family at this time. Jim was my first boss at barlows years ago. He instilled a life experience in me i will never forget. I work at Fleet Farm now and always loved talking to him when he came into shop. My heart broke a little when he told me of his illness. He seemed to have good spirits thru this hard time. He will be greatly missed. Dawn Donaldson
Lynette, Shane and Family,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you at the passing of your Dear Father and Grandfather. I will always remember him as I would shop at Barlow's. His contagious smile will live on forever for so many of us. Keep your memories close to your hearts.
Our Sincere Sympathy and Love,
Jim and Gaylene
It is with great sadness that I heard of Jim's passing. I will always remember him as "Bub" which is what the kids of Marion called him. We played pirates in the little creek that ran between our homes in Marion. His father brought in a bulldozer and mad it a little deeper for us. I was playing with him when he was hit in the eye and it had to be replaced. He never let that incident dull his sense of humor or his zest for life. May God bless his soul and bring him into his eternal kingdom.
Rainie,
I am so sorry to hear about your dad. Your loss, but Heaven's gain. I pray God's loving arms with sustain you through this week and your times of grief in the coming months. Even though I did not know him, I know he must have been a wonderful man to have raised such a precious daughter. Hugs & prayers to you!
