James Joseph Macken

James Joseph Macken, age 90, of Rochester died October 20.  Mr. Macken was born on January 22, 1919 in Rochester. He married Adeline Tomes on May 2, 1942.  She died on April 5, 1972.  James later married Arlene Solberg in Hayfield, MN on December 31, 1972 .

Survivors include his wife Arlene; children Stephen of Rochester, Peter (Janis) of Champlin, MN,  Gene (Joanne) of Milwaukee, WI,  Margaret (Stephen) Koutavas of Westminster, CO, Monica (Bruce Phillips) Macken of Seward, AK;  step-children Vicki (John) Engelbrent of Burneyville, OK,  and Daniel (Barbara) Solberg of Rochester;  2 brothers,  Francis (Vicky) Macken of NJ,  Dave (Midge) Macken of Rochester, and a sister Eileen (Jim) Mengis of Iowa City, IA; 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.  Mr. Macken was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Robert and Ralph, and son James J. Macken III.

James was Chief of Police for 37 years for the Rochester Police Department, retiring in 1986. He was also a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.   Jim was a Captain in the US Army during World War II.

A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, October 24, at 11:00am at Madonna Towers Chapel in Rochester where Jim mas a resident.  Friends may call from 4 to 7pm Friday eveningat the Macken Funeral Home and one hour in advance of the service at Madonna Towers.

The family prefers memorials to ALS and Leukemia Research.
