J. Eric Ostrom, 46, of Fountain, MN died Sunday, July 5th as the result of a motor vehicle accident.

Eric was born, September 22, 1968 in Thunder Bay, Canada. He moved to the U.S. when he was four years old. He graduated from Preston-Fountain High School in 1987. He proudly served in the U.S. Army from May 1990 to September 1992, which included a tour of duty in Desert Storm.

He married the love of his life, Sue Harstad on June 29, 1996. They started their life together in Chatfield, MN and later moved to their current farm outside of Fountain, MN where they raised their two children, Ascher and Haley.

Eric was co-owner of Grandview Memorial Gardens and had a passion for helping people. He was a volunteer EMT with the Preston Ambulance and had recently joined the Fountain Fire Department. Over the past couple years, many people got to know Eric at the doors of Mayo Clinic, where he assisted patients as they entered the clinic. Eric also made many friends while managing the Preston and Chatfield Golf Courses.  He was on the board of the Wildlife and Habitat of Fillmore County conservation group. One of his greatest loves was spending time with his family and friends. He was an avid conservationist, who enjoyed hunting pheasants and deer as well as raising pheasants. Eric also enjoyed golfing, bowling and being the life of the party.

Eric is survived by his wife of 19 years, Sue; son, Ascher; daughter, Haley; mother, Peggy (Denny) Brusse of Preston; one sister, Angie (Scott) Taylor of Lanesboro; one brother, Tim (MaryBeth) Ostrom of Harmony; two step-sisters, MariLyn (Stacey) Bakke of Preston and Gina (Jeff) Lindeland of Preston; mother-in-law, Miriam Harstad of Harmony; three brothers-in-law, Kurt (Karen) Harstad, Scott Harstad, and Mitch (Laura) Harstad; two sisters-in-law, Lori (Jeff) Campbell and Heidi (Doug) Hanson as well as many loved nieces and nephews.

Eric was preceded in death by his grandparents, Harold and Virginia Tienter, John and Norma Ostrom and father-in-law, Harold Harstad.

The memorial service for Eric will be at 11:00AM Friday, July 10, 2015 at Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony MN with Pastor Darby Lawrence officiating.  Burial with full military honors will be at the Greenfield Cemetery in Harmony.  Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Thursday, July 9, 2015 at Greenfield Lutheran Church and also for one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Condolences

The family of J. Eric Ostrom has received the following condolences.

Sue & family, so sorry for your loss. As you know, Eric's grand parents ( Harry & Virginia Tienter ) were very good friends of mine and I got to know Eric through them quite well. When my wife got discharged from St. Mary's last fall and we were needing help into our car, what was the first thing I heard walking into the hospital ( Hey Boomer ).  In my opinion, Eric was one of the nicest, willing to do anything for you, people I have ever met. The service was a wonderful tribute to a great person and I feel very honored to have called Eric a friend.

My heart grieves for your entire family.  I will be praying for healing and God to wrap his arms around all of you.  My dear friend, Heidi Harstad Hanson, I pray for you to be there to comfort your darling sister during  this difficult time.  My thoughts, prayers and love to all of you.  Karolin

Sue & Family:  We are so sorry to learn of Eric's passing.  He was so wonderful and it is shocking and so difficult to all of you.  My heart and prayers go out to you.

Sincerely,

Dan and Paula Graskamp

I had the pleasure of spending my junior year of high school with Eric at PFHS.  He was a great guy with a fantastic smile and an awesome sense of humor.

My heart, thoughts and prayers are with all of Eric's family and friends during this most difficult time.

We were so sorry to hear of your sudden and tragic loss.  Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

Just this past May, Memorial weekend, we drove into Grandview Cemetery in Rochester, to place flowers on my parent's grave.  Eric was walking nearby, and we rolled the car window down.  He immediately came to the car, big smile on his face, "Hey George...I will see what I can do @ the grass over your parent's grave...busy week, but I'll get it."  Eric, we are better folks for just knowing you and we extend to Sue and the entire family our heartfelt sympathy in this huge loss.  May God hold each of you in the palm of His hand and feel His eternal peace and presence during this difficult time.  God bless.

He was a friend a friend would like to have.  He was passionate about what mattered most, his wife, his kids, family, friends.

He will be so missed, but his smile, concern for others and voice will live on in all of our memories.  We are so sorry for the loss to the family and all who knew him.

Eric was a wonderful man, and I will miss him greatly. His smile and friendliness were contagious, and he was liked by everyone he met. If Eric was working at the door at St. Marys, I knew it would be a good day at work. He was a special kind of person, and a perfect example of how we should treat others each day. My deepest sympathy to Sue, Ascher and Haley, and to the rest of his family. It was an honor and blessing to know Eric, and his kindness will always be remembered.

All of us lost a true friend. Eric was always there to help anyone. To Sue, Ascher and Haley words cannot describe your loss. Preston Ambulance and Fountain Fire Department we are thinking of you during this loss! ? To Eric, until we meet again my friend!

Our deepest sympathy to all of you during this sad and difficult time.  May the Lord wrap His loving arms around you as you mourn Eric's loss.  We are thinking of you and praying for you.  May the promise of eternal life through faith in Christ bring you comfort and remind you that life is merely a pilgrimage to a far better home.  3

Dear Sue, Ascher and Haley! We are so very sorry for your loss of Eric. You have our deepest sympathies. Hugs from Ole Andreas, Marita and Kjersti (from Norway)

I saw Eric at St. Marys when I stopped to drop off a lunch or treats for Terry who is also a doorman there. He was always so sweet and funny. He would say "Julie you sure spoil that Terry." I always looked forward to running into him. I know all the guys hearts are heavy with the tragic sudden loss of Eric. Terry and I have been praying for you for strength for the hard days ahead. This is a BIG LOSS! We are saddened deeply by this news and wish it was a bad dream. Hopefully you will find some peace in the touching stories you will hear about him in the days to come. Laughter and tears for a beautiful soul. Keep his kindness and goodness alive in you all and he will still live on shining through in you. Julie Jones and Terry Matzke.

I was one of those lucky ones that got to know John threw my wife his cousin. For a brief time in my life spending time at family outings, camping, picnics and weddings. As my grandfather once said when he lost his cousin; “The sun shall rise, and sure to set. His time has come, have no regrets. His life he lived, we sure all know. A better place, he has to go. Rejoice today it's at an end. And he will see us, once again.”

So sorry for the loss of this young man, prayers and blessings sent to the whole family.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to you.  Life can be so fragile, loss so sudden, and hearts so broken in the wake of such a tragedy.  There are no answers or understanding to why this had to happen to Eric.  From all the stories I hear, he was one amazing and loved man.  May it bring you comfort to know how many lives have been deeply touched by Eric.  God be with you during this difficult time.

DEAR SUE, HALEY AND ASCHER

Tim, Peggy and family,

I am so very sorry for your loss.  Eric was great guy, everybody who knew Eric, liked Eric!  He was a huge part of our 20 year reunion, got it all set up for us and was there to enjoy it with us as well.  Tim and I also enjoyed talking with him when he was at the Golf Course in Chatfield, he always had a smile and always knew who you were.I can't imagine the loss you are feeling, as we all feel it too.  Love and prayers to you all.

To Eric's family, there are no words that can ease the pain of your terrible loss. Eric's smile and twinkling eyes will live on in the hearts of many.....we can all learn from the many acts of kindness Eric was known for.....he greeted me many mornings at St Mary's while my dad was hospitalized there reently.....his smile got my day off to a great start..and he wasn't even aware of it. The world has lost a great man and heaven has gained one of the best.

We are saddened and heartsick over the passing of Eric.  It has been many years since we last saw him, but we remember his sparkling eyes and easy smile.  May the comforting arms of God encircle your whole family during this most difficult time! May God bless you and keep you!  Love you,  Kay and Ed

My deepest condoleces for Eric and his family. The heavens have gained one amazing angel! Eric, you had a contagious smile. You lit up so many lives with your never-ending kindness. So bubbly and full of fun!! You will be missed. Class of 1987 has lost another true friend but you will never be forgotten. Thanks for the memories. Until we meet again. ?

My prayers go to all of Eric's family as I know he will be greatly missed.  I only worked with him a few times when he covered shifts at the door downtown at the Gonda, but they were always fun shifts to share with him.  He always had a smile on his face and a great way of working with the patients and staff.  I wish I had more opportunities to work with him, but will remember him fondly and will continue to pray for all those he left behind.

I will miss working the door at St. Mary's with Eric.  I've only known Eric for a short time, but feel like I have known him all of my life because he was always very friendly and we could talk and laugh about pretty much everything.

He had that way about him. He loved people and he was always a pleasure to work with.  That's not something easy to posses, but this gift he truly had.

My thoughts and prayers are with Eric's family and close friends. He will definitely be missed, but taking what we have learned from Eric and applying it to our own lives can make a positive difference for all of us. Im pretty sure he would agree.

Thank you Eric for the smiles and fun times you shared with me!

Sue, Ascher, Haley, and Family,

Please accept our deepest sympathy.

You are all in our thoughts and prayers.

We will always remember Eric with a smile on his face!
