Harry L. Kapinos, Sr.
The Kapinos family of Rochester sadly announce the passing of Harry Linnae Kapinos, Sr. Mr Kapinos, 78, died Monday, April 5, at his home following a brief battle with cancer.
Born on April 8, 1931 in Canby, Minnesota, Mr. Kapinos grew up on a farm. After graduation from Canby High School, Harry entered the Navy on November 17, 1951, training in Great Lakes, then specialized as a Hospital Medical Corpsman. He trained at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia, where he met Josephine Ullom.
Harry and Jo married on November 14, 1953. Mr. Kapinos’ duty stations included Portsmouth Naval Hospital in Virginia, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the U.S. Naval Dispensary in Washington D.C., and the U.S. Capitol Building, serving as secretary to the Attending Physician to Congress, a position he held with great esteem for 13 years. Harry retired after 20 years as Chief MC in the Navy in November 1970.
He moved his family to Rochester, Minnesota after accepting a supervisory position at the Mayo Clinic Blood Bank, a position he proudly served for 23 years. He retired from Mayo Clinic on May 31, 1993.
After retirement, he and his wife delivered the Post Bulletin Newspaper for 7 years. Harry and Jo were married for 56 years and enjoyed traveling the States in their RV. He loved to garden, listening to polkas, casinoing, and will be remembered as a personable, kind, compassionate man who had a wonderful sense of humor. He treated people with fairness and respect endearing himself into the hearts and lives of many. He absolutely adored his doggies, Brandy, Mikey and Bo!
He is survived by his lifetime soul mate, Jo, and children, Bob (LeAnn) Kapinos, Harry Kapinos Jr., Mary Kapinos, Jonathan (Judy) Kapinos; grandchildren, Tony, Peter, Curtis, Aaron, Jonathan, Andy and Lenny; his 88 year old sister Lucille in Alaska; and many nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Adolph and Mary; son, Michael Kapinos; sister, Marcella; brother, Willie; and his in-laws, Edward and Josephine Ullom, Sr.
There will be a funeral Mass 10:00AM on Friday, April 9, 2010 at Resurrection Catholic Church with the Rev. Thomas Loomis officiating. A visitation will be held at Macken Funeral Home on Thursday, April 8 from 5:00-8:00PM and also 1 hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Gardens.
