Gerald Thomas Mahoney

Gerald “Jerry” Mahoney, age 85 passed away peacefully May 31, 2019. The funeral Mass for Jerry Mahoney will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 5, 2019 at  Co-Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Rochester with the Rev. Msgr. Gerald A. Mahon officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home and one hour prior to the Mass at the church on Wednesday.

Jerry was born November 10, 1933 in Rochester, MN to Frank and Bridget Mahoney. After serving two years in the U.S. Army, Jerry finished his B.A. from Mankato State College in 1958.  He started his career with the Mayo Clinic in 1959 in the business office, where he processed insurance claims and collected accounts. He subsequently worked in several different administrative assignments and in 1986, when Mayo Clinic formally merged with Saint Marys Hospital, Jerry Mahoney became Associate Administrator and then Administrator of the hospital until his retirement in 1996.

There was one part of his job that he’d loved from the very beginning and he knew he would miss when he retired — the “people part of it.” And the people part of it was what led Jerry to a fulfilling, active retirement. Jerry was a very active volunteer with many church and community organizations and served as President of the Rochester Senior Center Foundation Board and President of the Saint Marys Hospital Sponsorship Board (1998-2008), and Chair of the Mayo Clinic Heritage Days Committee (1999-2010).

Jerry believed the key to a good life was people:  First family, then friends, and friends from his working life. His positive outlook was remarkable. People were drawn to him and wanted to spend their time with him. This was true not only of people of his generation, but the friends of his kids as well. Most importantly, to be truly happy Jerry required only his bride Patty at his side, maybe a cigar and a beer, and a car to get them “on down the road” for one of their many adventures.

Jerry is survived by his bride of 60 years, Patty; children, Shaun (Stefany), Tim, Mary Pat (Dave) Oslund, Joe (Aimee), Matt, and Erin (Stan) Fiorito; and grandchildren, Katherine, Joey, Davey, Megan, Emma, Matt, Lucy, Jack, Lily, and Henry.

Thank you to the Mayo Clinic Charter House and Mayo Hospice nurses and staff for their loving care and support of Jerry over the past several months.

Memorials preferred to the Poverello Foundation, a non-profit to help patients in need who are unable to afford medical care or to the Lourdes High School Foundation.

Patty and family - I was so sad to hear about Jerry’s passing.  I have such fond memories of our times together when I was part of the Lourdes family.

I took care of Bridge Mahoney at St Mary’s when she passed and that’s where I actually met Jerry.  He told me if I ever wanted a job downtown, to give him a call.

I did and we worked together for many years.

Keep your  memories and each other close during this time.

Sherry

Dear Patty and Family,

My sincere sympathy to all of you on the passing of Jerry.  As his obituary states, he was a people guy and made everyone feel better just being around him.  I enjoyed working with him and I enjoyed running into you, Patty, with Jerry out and about in Rochester.  Jerry was always fun to visit with and I enjoyed hearing about your family and activities.

Rejoice in your memories of a good man and your lives together.  God Bless.

I was blessed to have worked with Jerry many years ago at Mayo.  He was, indeed, a wonderful leader and colleague.  He always had a smile for everyone who was fortunate enough to come in contact with him.  He will be truly missed.  He was an excellent role model for us all.  My sympathies and condolences to his family.
