Fr. LaVern Trocinski

Father LaVern “Father T” Trocinski, 87 of La Crescent, MN, passed away on May 8, 2021 at Mayo Clinic Health System – Franciscan Healthcare in La Crosse, WI.

Father T was born on April 30, 1934 in Coon Valley, WI to Elmer and Olga (Jorgenson) Trocinske. He grew up in Dakota, MN, attended Dakota Grade School and graduated from Winona High School. He studied Philosophy at Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Winona, then completed his Theology degree at St. Paul Seminary, St. Paul, MN. On May 31, 1960, he was ordained to the Catholic Priesthood at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Winona by The Most Reverend Bishop Edward A. Fitzgerald. Father T later studied at Regis College in Denver, CO, obtaining a Master’s Degree in Family and Community Development. His associate assignments included Queen of Angels in Austin, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in Easton, and St. John the Evangelist in Rochester.

As Pastor, he served at St. Theodore in Albert Lea, St. James in Twin Lakes, St. Stanislaus Kosta and St. John Nepomucene in Winona, and Pax Christi in Rochester.

Additional assignments included Chaplain for St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Wabasha, Methodist Hospital in Rochester, College of St. Teresa, Lamberton Home for Children, Cabrini Home, St. Thomas Aquinas Newman Center all in Winona. Father T was confessor to St. Edward Convent in Austin, moderator for Winona Council of Catholic Women, marriage therapist for Catholic Charities, area and diocesan director of the Campaign for Human Development, founding member of the Bureau of Priests’ Retirement, member of the Diocesan Pastoral Council and Priest’s Senate, College of Consulters, Presbyteral Council, Bishop Advisory Council for Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary, Priests’ Committee for Capital Campaign, area director for Austin, diocesan director of Family Life, dean of the Winona Deanery, Parochial Administrator for St. John the Baptist in Dodge Center, St. Vincent de Paul in West Concord, and St. Francis de Sales in Claremont.

On July 1, 2002, Father T retired, joining the ranks of senior priests in the Diocese of Winona-Rochester. In retirement he continued to offer assistance in many of the parishes in the Diocese until health issues limited his ability to do so. After moving to SpringBrook Assisted Living in La Crescent in 2020, he was honored to celebrate weekly Mass with the residents.

Father T is survived by his brothers Donald (ZoeAnn) and Robert (Sandi) both of LaCrescent, MN and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his sister Donna (Rolland) Wilson.

Father T’s Funeral Mass will be held on Friday, May 14, 2021 at 11:00AM at Pax Christi Catholic Church in Rochester. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the Mass. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Dakota, MN.

Condolences

The family of Fr. LaVern Trocinski has received the following condolences.

We had the privilege of Father T, marrying us, and baptizing both of our children.   We loved his humor and commonality to all people. He left his imprint on the world.   Peace.

May God bless you all during this time! We so loved Fr. T for his quiet strength, humility, meaningful homilies, caring ways and mostly for the gift of his presence. My favorite photo of him is of Fr. T cradling my now 22yo daughter in his arms with a huge genuine smile on his face, his eyes twinkling after baptizing our daughter. He will always be our Gentle Giant in our hearts and will never be forgotten!

Love, hugs and our deepest sympathies to you all,

Cherie, Rick,Catie, Kyle

Father T you were a great man. I always enjoyed our being together whether at RCS events or up at Holy Spirit at church - You always had a big smile and I loved you man. I will truly miss you for the person you are. Thanks.

We were lucky to be parishioners at Pax Christi while Fr T (he was so kind to encourage the shortened form of his name) was pastor.  He gave guidance and example for all kinds of issues in his humble and down to earth way, and was  at home mowing the lawn as much as preaching.  Now we have Fr. Sauer as our pastor, a priest he mentored early in his vocation.  His influence lives on in all of us.

May he rest in peace.

We were fortunate to have Fr. T. as our pastor at St.Theodore’s in Albert Lea.  What a commitment to the lives of others.  May he Rest In Peace.

Blongs

Father T was my junior high religion teacher at Queen of Angels in AUSTIN. We certainly enjoyed his classes and became very good at ducking chalk headed our way on occasion. Always very good to us, especially at 6 am when we served mass at the convent for the nuns and the dimes he gave to get a roll at Kolbs bakery. May he Rest In Peace .

We all loved having Fr. T as our pastor at Pax Christi. What a wonderful man, a wonderful priest, a wonderful example for all of us! We still cherish a particularly special memory of him singing during mass as we celebrated the Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday. It was the most beautiful mass ever. This world will not be the same without him.

I have such fond memories of Father T. He has supported my family in happy times and sad times. What a wonderful man. Fly high with the angels.

WELL DONE Good AND FAITHFUL SERVANT

we join family, priests he mentored, parishioners he guided and friends who felt blessed to have known him, with sympathy, prayers and love.

I first met Father T in Austin, Minnesota when I Taught/Coached at Pacelli High School.  Exceptional Priest and Human Being.  God Bless.

Father T was a fine pastor, connecting with kids and adults with his humble, quiet personality. His big arms gave thousands of gentle hugs to so many of us. I always saw Father T as a true servant leader. Thank you, Father T, for your many years of selfless service to all who had the chance to be impacted by your work. Thanks to his family for being part of creating and supporting this wonderful man in his vocation of the priesthood.

My name is Linda Stenzel now but was Linda Mix when I first met Fr. T.  He was the Chaplin at CST in Winona while I was attending college there.

For one of my classes called Religious Studies I had to do a presentation project on abortion.  I had asked him if he would be willing to be a panelist and he said "yes."

After graduation I married and my husband Tom and I moved to Albert Lea and who followed us there....you're right, Fr. T.

While being a parishioner at St. Theodore's he had approached me if I would be willing to start a Birthright office and with tge help of a few other members and his support a Birthright office was started.

After my husband lost his job in Albert Lea we decided to move to Rochester where the location had us in the neighborhood of Pax Christi Church.

It wasn't long when the announcement was made that Fr. T  was coming to be the new pastor.  Now I was really beginning to wonder what did I do back at CST that he was following me again.

It was after my husband and I had done the liturgical decorating in Albert Lea he had approached us if we would be willing to get some things going at Pax....and so we did .

Fr T will be one person who will be missed by many.

Tom and I send our condolences to his family

Linda

My deepest sympathy to the family of Father T. I had the pleasure of knowing T for the past 30 yrs. I was first introduced to Pax Christi singles ministry in 1989-1993. I have such wonderful memories of Father T and all the beautiful people I meet and became friends with and still have those friendships. He was a big loving teddy bear with such a huge heart. After moving to AZ I still kept in touch. When I came home to visit family in Iowa I would also try to stop in Rochester to see my friends and T. He will be missed. May he rest in peace @ last!

When I was in elementary school, more than 40 years ago, our family attended St. Theodore Catholic Church in Albert Lea, MN and Father Trocinski, "Father T" was our Priest.  Due to his height and booming deep voice, when Father T spoke, as an elementary school student you felt God Himself was talking to you.  A vivid memory I retain today was my first communion.  On that Sunday so many years ago, after normal communion was completed, Father T had me walk to him alone before the entire congregation as he stood in front of the congregation.  He proceeded to give me my first communication.  Then, he directed me turn around a face the congregation and he requested a round of applause.  Needless to say, I was on top of the world hearing that applause.  A few years later, Father T was assigned to a different church and I had no further contact with Father T as a minor.  Fast forward more than 20 years.  After living in different parts of the country as an adult, my fiance, Andrea, myself, and child, Jasmine, returned to Minnesota, specifically Rochester, Minnesota.  Pax Christi Catholic Church was near our residence.  Thus, we decided to attend Mass at Pax Christi.  I was not paying particularly close attention at the start of Mass until the Priest spoke and suddenly I immediately recognized that booming deep voice and realized Father T was the Priest.  I thought to myself, "What are the odds?"; and "What a small world!!"  Our family continued attending Mass at Pax Christi and Andrea and Jasmine became members of the Catholic Faith, which resulted in Father T giving Andrea and Jasmine their first Catholic communion.  Also, during her youth, Jasmine was an alter server for many years for Father T.  Father T was scheduled to marry Andrea and I.  However, due to health reasons he was not able.  Prior to my 2003 military deployment to Afghanistan, Father T arrived at our house to bless our home and family, which secured my safe return when my military deployment was complete.  I guess the point of this dissertation is I am amazed one individual can have such a positive impact on an individual and his family over many decades.

I do have a confession, one day driving home after a difficult day at work, I got behind an extremely slow driver.  Predictably, I stated some naughty words under my breath.  I was able to pass the driver to see who was the slow driver.  To my surprise, the driver was Father T.  Ugh!!  I just hope when I arrive at the pearly gates, Father T will overlook those naughty words and allow me in.

Father T will be dearly missed.

To the family of Fr. T. we extend our deepest sympathy. We knew him well from the many years he served as pastor of Pax Christi Church and will remember him as being so kind to everyone. He is forever in our hearts.
