Evelyn “Evie” Anne Cierzan

Evelyn Cierzan, 96, of Rochester, MN, died Monday, April 1, 2019 at Madonna Towers Skilled Nursing Facility after a brief illness.

Evie was born November 6, 1922 to William and Eva (Baier) Lawler on the family farm in Haverhill Township on Irish Ridge. She was the fourth of six children. She graduated from St. John’s (now Lourdes) High School in 1940. Evie worked at Co-op Oil in the business office and at St. Marys Hospital in the cashier’s office for many years after her graduation. She returned to St. Marys to work as a pharmacy technician in the 1970s.

She married James F. Cierzan on July 30, 1960 at St. Francis Church in Rochester. They were lifelong residents of Rochester, MN. James died January 21, 2003.

Survivors include daughter, Anne (Joe) Schuld of St. Paul and their children, Eric, Sara, and Emma; son, John (Patti) Cierzan of Rochester and their children, Katie (Paul) Kelley, Emily (Javon) Bea, Ian and Casey Cierzan; and son, Tom (Kari) Cierzan of West St. Paul and their children, Luke and Anna.

She is preceded in death by brothers, Richard; Robert (sister-in-law Pat), Tom (sister-in-law Mary B.); and sisters, Mary Louise McCarthy (brother-in-law Gene) and Betty (brother-in-law Ran). She was also preceded in death by granddaughter, Maggie Schuld.

Margaret Lawler, wife of Richard, is still living at 99 and is the sole Lawler of the family in that generation.

Evie moved to Madonna Towers Independent Living Apartments in August 2014 and made many new friends, young and old, while there. She was a regular at daily exercise and was one of the Coffee Girls who met most mornings in the Madonna Bistro (What happens at the Bistro stays at the Bistro!).  Evie was a regular at Happy Hour twice weekly where she would enjoy her Moscato with friends and visitors.

She always enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She loved gardening, working on her lawn and her daily crossword puzzle.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Easter Sunday, April 21, 2019 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home in Rochester.  Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. on Easter Monday, April 22, 2019 at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Rochester with Rev. Russell Scepaniak officiating. There will be visitation one hour prior to the Mass on Monday.

Memorials are preferred to Madonna Living Community of Rochester, MN, and Sharing and Caring Hands of Minneapolis, MN.

Evie would say “Thanks a Million” to all who have been part of her life over the years!

sorry  about the   passing  of   evie

I am sorry to hear of your loss.  When you are all gathered together, you will see everyone and everything that your parents' lives made possible.

She was a wonderful woman.  We always enjoyed family gatherings with her.  She will miss her!

I remember Evie coming over to my parents home, with flowers for their garden!! My mother work d with Evie at St. Mary’s pharmacy. Evie lived a long and happy (fun) life. Wish we all could!! She will meet my parents in heaven!                                              Jill Woodward (Lois Ramaker’s daughter)

On behalf of Madonna Towers residents and staff, we were honored to know, to laugh, to embrace Evie's life and family.  She has touched many of us in so many ways, from her smile, to her laugh, to that sparkle in her eyes, to her grace-filled presence each and every day.  To know her was to love her and we were blessed with her presence.  She truly was one in a million!  Thank you for sharing Evie with us.

Dr. Cierzan & Patti, my deepest condolences in Evie’s passing. I enjoyed my daily visits with her at Madonna Towers and know she will be missed by many.

John, very sorry for your loss. Your family is in my prayers.

Fond memories of Evie, The Matriach of the wonderful Cierzan family.  Warmest memories of Jim, John, Tom and Anne—wonderful neighbors in NW Rochester for many, many years. Sincerest sympathy in your loss.  She always wore a ‘smile’ that lit up the day.  God bless you all during this time of grief.  She left such a legacy of love for family and friends and will be dearly missed.
