Condolences

The family of Ervin Henry Schlick has received the following condolences.

Mr. Schlick was our band teacher in 1960 when I started as a 7th grader at Como Park Jr. High in St. Paul. He was one of the most inspiring people I have known. Even on cold winter mornings, he got us to come to school at 7AM to rehearse. Mr. Schlick taught us to improve our musical skills, and drew us together from a bunch of blaring and honking kids into a cohesive group that could actually play beautiful music. While I no longer play the trombone, I still remember some of his sage advice. "Here's the most important thing: If you all start together and end together, nobody will much notice any mistakes you make in the middle." And I remember how he would gently correct us if we sounded so terrible that he had to ask us to start over. He would shake his head and say "Strictly from hunger" -- meaning that we were playing so poorly that the only reasonable explanation must have been that we were all weak from starvation.

I am sorry to hear of Mr. Schlick's passing. I am confident that his family and friends have many fond memories of their time together. Best wishes to you all. Bruce

To the Family of Mr. Schlick;

My sincere condolences to the Schlick Family.

I was a student of Mr. Schlick at Central High School in 1965 and 66. I lived a block away on Ashland and rode to school with him on many cold winter mornings. His legacy will be one of generosity, kindness, musicianship and support of his students. He was always available to his students.

Sincerely,

Just learned of Ervs passing this evening. Liz and Nan, you are in my thoughts and prayers! I enjoyed getting to know Erv over the last couple of years at Stout. He spoke fondly of his days teaching and leading band and working with students. He also spoke fondly of his wife Barb who he missed dearly. It gives me some peace knowing they are together again. Glad I got to know him. He will be missed.

I loved having Erv as our UW-Stout band director and as I got to know him, loved him as a friend. We called him “Dear Old Dad” at Stout and it was a term of endearment for us. Erv had a huge role for me in my college years and I’m glad we always kept in touch since those days.

I will miss my dear friend and the stories of family, music, hunting and our faith that we shared. They will always remain part of me and I cherish that.

With Love,

Tyler Pease

Mr Schlick.  I remember him so well.  Was it Como Junior High or Washington Senior High?  In the sixties, anyway.  Such a nice person.  He made the music come alive for us.  He was a wonderful teacher, and we were fortunate to have him. My sympathy to his family.
