Elizabeth “Bette” Joy Bailey

A  memorial mass for Elizabeth Joy “Bette” Bailey will be held at 1p.m. Tuesday, November 11, 2014, at St. Francis Catholic Church, with the Rev. Mark McNea officiating.  A private family burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in Winona, Minnesota.  The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Bette passed away on Sunday, November 2, 2014 at Prairie Meadows Senior Living in Kasson, MN.

Bette was born on June 29, 1924 in Grand Rapids, MN to Jacob Zeininger and Helga Marie Halstrom.  She graduated from Grand Rapids High School and enlisted in the United States Navy.  Bette met Bill while attending a Navy basketball game where Bill fell into her lap and the rest her life.  The two were married on July 20, 1946, in Grand Rapids, MN.

Bette spent most of her life as a home-maker.  She was a church organist and past President of the Winona Council of Catholic Women.

Bette enjoyed boating on the Mississippi River and golfing with Bill.  She also enjoyed knitting for family and friends.

Survivors include her son, Sam Bailey, and daughter, Kathleen Carney, both of Rochester; three grandchildren, Mark Bailey of Austin, Texas, Kate Pomerleau of Zumbro Falls and Christina Carney of Winona, eight great-grandchildren and a sister, Kathleen Jetland of Scottsdale, AZ.  Bette was preceded in death by her husband Bill and parents.

Condolences

The family of Elizabeth “Bette” Joy Bailey has received the following condolences.

I am so sorry for your loss. I truly enjoyed the times I spent with Bette. My thoughts are with all of you.

Theresa Splittstoesser

I also had the pleasure of knowing Betty when she lived in Byron, we went to the same church. it was ALWAYS fun to run into her, she was so friendly, kind and fun. She was truly one of a kind and I always admired her. God Bless you all.

I am so sorry for your loss, Kate.   Your family is in my thoughts and prayers as you lay your grandmother to rest.

I grew up with Sam and our group would regularly hang out at the Bailey house.  There was always good food and good cheer.  Betty had a fabulous sense of humor.  Bill's stories were spellbinding.

Bill and Betty welcomed me into their home when I started law school in St. Louis, and I credit them with providing me with the structure that I needed to lay a firm foundation for graduate school.

Room, board and laundry for $100 per month.  They almost had to get the sheriff to remove me.  I'll always remember the ABC news with Harry Reasoner and Howard K. Smith on weekday evenings, cheeseburgers and 60 minutes on Sunday evenings, and as long as it wasn't a school night, a cocktail before dinner.  Even after I moved out of 92 Pebblebrook Lane, in with classmates, I (and my law school roommates)were still always invited for the Sunday evening rituals.

They were like second parents to me, and I will miss them dearly.

Sam and Dede, my condolences on the loss of your mother.  I fondly remember growing up next door, going out on the houseboat to dinners at Wally's Supper Club and the time all of us Olson's came over to your house early in the morning when our furnace blew-up.  Bill and Betty were always so inviting and kind to us Olson kid's, even when we were building tree-houses and, I am quite sure, being the pests of the neighborhood.  I wanted you to know that I still talk about some of those old times with friends and family and that the two of you and your mother and father are in my thoughts and prayers.   Mark Olson

I had the pleasure of knowing Bette when she & Bill lived in Byron, MN.  She was the organist at Christ the King Catholic Church there and played at my wedding in 1985.  She gave great hugs and had such exuberant faith; her middle name fit her perfectly ~ "JOY"!  In those Byron days, I was a teenager and learned confidence and individuality from Bette.  Blessings to you all
