Elaine Maude McCleary

Elaine Maude McCleary, 83, of Rochester, MN passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2020 at Arbor Terrace Assisted Living in Rochester.

Elaine was born on December 18, 1936 in Dover, MN to Claude and Eldora (Strande) Scott. She graduated from high school in St. Charles, MN. Elaine married Bill Ryan on October 1, 1955 until his passing in January of 1991. She later married Earl McCleary on August 26, 1997 in Rochester. Elaine worked at the history desk at Mayo Clinic for many years until her retirement in 1996.

Elaine was a member of Auxiliary American Legion in Eyota, Minnesota and a volunteer at St. Marys Hospital. She enjoyed traveling, dancing, taking walks, quilting, fishing, and she was an avid bowler.

Elaine is survived by her husband; five children, Tim (Sue) Ryan of Omaha, NE, Jean (Daryl) Spencer of Rochester, MN, Steven (Peter) Ryan of Lambertville, NJ, Joseph (Barbara) Ryan of Rochester, MN and Mark (Robin) Ryan of Tazewell TN; 12 grandchildren; five great grandchildren; three sisters, Becky (Dale) Carlsen of Stewartville, Minnesota, Marie (Richards) Betts of Rochester, Minnesota and Carolyn (Dave) Wiebold of Rochester, Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her parents; six sisters, Georgia, Letta, Sylvia, Dorothy, Karen, and Cindy; and one brother, Ralph.

Memorials are preferred to St. Pius X Catholic Church.

A Memorial Mass for Elaine will be held on Monday, January 20, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church with Rev. Russell Scepaniak officiating. The visitation will be held on Sunday, January 19, 2020 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home in Rochester, MN and one hour prior to the service at church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery at a later date.

Our sympathy and prayers, Earl. Death's value is its necessity before one can begin to enjoy eternal life. Our prayer is that Elaine is enjoying her eternal reward, life with her God.

I was sorry to hear of my cousin's passing.  My condolences to Elaine's family.

I bowled with Elaine & against, many times over the years at Rec Lanes.


She was a very good bowler & great lady!

Our deepest condolences to the entire family. So vividly remember the many years of being neighbors. Hold tight to your many memories and speak of her often. Roger and I are currently in Florida but will be sending prayers of comfort for all. 

I always remembered Elaine as being very kind. She was a great aunt. She made me a Batman suit many years ago when I was young and I loved it. Never forgot that. She was a wonderful family. I have happy memories of going to Dover to see her and my cousins when I was little. Love them all. I am so sorry for your loss.
