Elaine L. Stokes

Elaine (O’Connell) Stokes died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on August 19, 2012.

Elaine was born to Francis and Phoebe O’Connell of Simpson, MN.  She was the 4th child of 16 children.  She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Lourdes High School.  She married Lloyd Stokes on October 13, 1947.  Lloyd died in 1986.  In March 1991, Elaine and Willard Wade had their union blessed at St. Mary’s Church in Lake City.  Willard preceded her in death earlier this year. Elaine retired from the Mayo Clinic where she worked in the Media Lab.  She enjoyed visiting with family and friends, cooking, gardening and the companionship of Chester (her dog).  Her house was always open for a cup of coffee, some cookies or banana bread, and lots of conversation.  Friends were often gifted with apple pies.  Her pot roast was a work of art.

She is survived by four children: Connie Perry (Allen) of Grand Rapids,  Minnesota; Tom Stokes of Rochester; John (Mary Lou) Stokes of Rochester; Rita Krupp (Mark) of Carlsbad, California and four grandchildren:  Bonnie Stokes, Sara Blouin, Adam Krupp and Sarah Gariety.  Elaine is also survived by her sisters: Sister Conal (O’Connell), Theresa Helgerson, Rosella Jech, Phoebe Whistler, Marlene Towey and by her brother, Charles O’Connell.  She is preceded in death by her parents and nine siblings.

A Funeral Mass will be held for Elaine at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, August 23, 2012 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Nelson officiating. A visitation will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home and one hour prior to the Mass.   Burial will be in St. Bridget’s Cemetery in Simpson, MN (2123 County Road 16 SE Rochester, 55902)

Memorials are suggested to the St. Bridget’s Cemetery Association.

Condolences

The family of Elaine L. Stokes has received the following condolences.

Our deepest sympathies.  Elaine was a kind, generous lady and made my Gramps (Willard) so very happy.  He loved her very much as did we.  A highlight at Christmas was the enormous tray of goodies she would prepare and give to our family!

Our love,

Holly and Sulo Kyyra

Elaine was a wonderful neighbor and will be missed dearly. She made Sedona and I always feel welcome. She will never be forgotten. I will think of her each time sedona and I walk by her house. My prayers are with all of her family as each of them grieve her loss.

Tom and Family, I am very sorryfor yor lost.  It is hard for all of us when we lose our mothers.  God bless you all.

I read with sadness Elaine's obituary.  She was such a lovely person.  I remember her smile, her honesty and her lovely perspective on life.  I worked with her in the laboratory.  Know you are all in my thoughts.  Leslie Hall

Like all O'Connell women, Elaine was both a pillar of strength and font of down to earth wisdom and love.  She had a kind heart, a ready laugh, and a sharp mind.  She will be missed by many.  Though we will miss her here among us, she will surely find a peaceful, sweet resting place in heaven beside her parents Pheobe and Francis and her many loved ones who've gone before her.  My heart goes out to her immediate family as they adjust to her absence in their everyday lives.  We will keep you all in our prayers as you begin to cope with this enormous loss.  God bless.

Oh my.....God Bless Elaine.   What a wonderful, spirited, strong woman!   She was a real pistol and a true delight.   The block has not been the same in her absence and now there is an enormous hole in the heart of the neighborhood.  I only hope that I can one day be the woman she was.

My deepest sympathies to the entire Stokes Family.  I saw firsthand the love, attention and support you all provided her as she made her way.......God love and Bless you.

Extending peace to your family and words of comfort. Elaine was fortunate to have gone home and be with our Lord and Savior. You can bet that "Willard" was there to greet her and they walked hand in hand.

Miss heidi Lund

My condolences to the Stokes family. Elaine was a wonderful Aunt! Always there with encouraging words and her wonderful laugh.

God Bless!
