Edward R. “Ed” Miller

Edward Ralph “Ed” Miller, 91 of Rochester, passed away on February 10, 2014 at Season’s Hospice House.  Ed was born on February 24, 1922 in Rochester.  As a young man, he moved with his parents to Virginia, MN and attended schools there.

Ed joined the Civilian Conservation Corp, serving in two camps: Company 725 in Orr, Minnesota, and Company 717 in Side Lake, MN. Following his work for the CCC, Ed enlisted in the US Army Air Corp, and fought in the European and African campaigns during WWII.

Ed married Vivian Johnson at the First Lutheran Church in Hibbing, MN on September 7, 1945.  He attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis before moving to Rochester in 1947. Ed worked for the US Post Office for seven years prior to being employed by IBM Rochester in 1957. He retired in 1984.

Ed is a charter member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Rochester. His hobbies included metal detecting as a member of the Zumbro Valley Treasure Hunter’s Club, doing crossword puzzles, reading, and especially spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife Vivian of over 68 years, a son Sheldon (Diane) of Globe, AZ, four grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.

A Memorial Service for Ed will be held at 11:00AM on Monday, February 17, 2014 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church with Pastor Charles Ortloff officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral service at Gloria Dei.

Condolences

The family of Edward R. “Ed” Miller has received the following condolences.

My heart felt condolences to Vivian, Sheldon and Carol and to all of his grandchildren.

An uncle through marriage is just a way to describe someone, but to me he really was my uncle---I will miss him as well.

Uncle Ed's jocular nature always seemed to preceed him. That was his nature....always. I believe he was born with a "funny" bone.

As they say in the air force: "Keep them flying"  Uncle Ed: Keep flying. You will always be high on my list.

Joe and Nancy

I recently read this quote… "A good life is when you smile often, dream big, laugh a lot, and realize how blessed you are for what you have."  Dad definitely had a good life.

Dad loved to make people laugh.  His quick wit was evidence of his intelligence. He wrote the funniest Emails I have ever received!  I especially loved the ones he wrote to me using his "Texas accent"!

He welcomed me into his family and into his heart.  I will always treasure our memories.  I love and will miss him.
