Earl Lake Meredith Jr.

It seems only fitting that a long-time sheet metal worker and business manager for the Local #218 Sheet Metal Workers Union would leave this earth on Labor Day. Earl L. Meredith was a lifelong resident of Rochester, MN and died on September 4th at Seasons Hospice Home.

Earl Lake Meredith Jr. was born on February 12, 1928 in Rochester. He graduated from Rochester High School in 1946. On November 1, 1947, he married Dorothy Holmberg in Cresco, Iowa. Earl “Swede” started as an apprentice with the Sheet Metal Worker’s Local #218 in Rochester. Swede was a very active member in the union and in 1973 he was elected to the position of Business Manager and Financial Secretary for Local #218 that served the southern part of the State of Minnesota. Swede was also a member of the Sheet Metal Apprentice Board and the Health & Welfare Committee for many years. In 1983, the local union merged with St. Paul and he served the same area as Business Representative until his retirement in 1990. After his retirement, Swede stayed busy working on the Salvation Army Board, Habitat for Humanity, and TRIAD.

Swede was a member of Homestead United Methodist Church and a valued trustee for many years. He enjoyed camping, gardening, feeding the birds, and of course an occasional squirrel or two!

Swede is survived by two sons, Mark (Lory Peterson), Alan (Connie); daughter, Susan; and adopted daughters, Edee Madsen, and Amber Swensen. Swede is also survived by his sister, Janet Cocker of Chatfield; four grandchildren, Chris (Clancy) Patterson and Ben Patterson of Memphis, TN, Elizabeth (Andy) Gappa of Minnesota City, MN, and Alyssia Meredith of Stewartville, MN; great-grandchildren, Meredith and Sophie Patterson of Memphis, and Logan and Aubrey Gappa of Minnesota City. He is preceded in death by his wife, Dory Meredith; and daughter, Ann Miles.

Memorials may be made to the Salvation Army.

Private family graveside service will be held at a later date.
