Dr. Paul W. Scanlon

Dr. Paul W. Scanlon, 87, longtime Mayo Clinic Staff member, died at Seasons Hospice Wednesday,
Feb. 22, 2012, surrounded by his family and loving wife of 64 years, Jane. The cause of death was complications of Alzheimer’s Disease.

Born March 1, 1924, in Fulton, N.Y., he was the second-born of Maurice and Mary Barbara Scanlon. After graduating from high school at age 16, he attended Syracuse University on the Navy V12 scholarship program, receiving his M.D. degree in 1946. While interning at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, he met student nurse Jane Marie Blomstrand. They married on Feb. 10, 1948, in long Beach, Calif., while he was stationed at the long Beach Naval Base Hospital.

He was transferred to Great Lakes Naval Hospital, where he served until 1950. A chance request to accompany his former roommate to an interview at Mayo Clinic resulted in Paul being offered a residency in radiology, thus beginning his career-long commitment to Mayo Clinic and the Rochester community. He completed his residency in 1952 and joined the Mayo Staff in 1953. He enjoyed a long, distinguished career at Mayo Clinic, ascending to Chairman of the Department of Therapeutic Radiology and the title of Professor of Therapeutic Radiology. His work on radiation dosing led to split-dose therapy being adopted as a standard treatment option, and his work with brain tumors
produced a definitive paper concerning the treatment of astrocytoma.

Both during his years on Mayo Clinic Staff and after his retirement in 1984, he and Jane were avid world travelers, and they have enjoyed winters in Marco Island, Fla., since 1986. Together they enjoyed bicycling, gardening, reading, the arts, and spending time with family. They were generous supporters of Mayo Clinic Foundation and many local and national charities.

He is survived by his wife, Jane, and their children: Dr. Patricia Scanlon Bloom and Dr. Harrison G. Bloom, and their children, Laura Bloom Fletcher and Jedd Bloom; Dr. Barry Scanlon, and his sons, Alex Scanlon and Collin Scanlon Gumprecht; and Dr. Paul Scanlon and Maggie Scanlon, R.N., and their children, Luke Scanlon and Kelsey Scanlon, R.N. He was preceded in death by a son, Michael, a daughter, Barbara, and his sister, Janet Scanlon Jennings.

The funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 25, at St. Francis Catholic Church, 1114 3rd Street, S.E., in Rochester, with the Rev. Mark McNea officiating.  A lunch will follow.

Contributions in lieu of flowers may be directed to the Channel One Food Bank, the Poverello Foundation for patients in financial need at St. Mary’s Hospital, or Seasons Hospice of Rochester.

Macken Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.  On-line condolences are welcome at www.mackenfuneralhome.com.

Condolences

The family of Dr. Paul W. Scanlon has received the following condolences.

Paul, We were saddened to learn of your fathers passing. He must have been a kind, giving and caring person.  That spirit lives on in you. Our sincere sympathy & condolences. Greg & Lydia Toogood

I am saddened to hear of you loss. My thoughts and prayers are with your family during this difficult time.

We are thinking of all of you at this time.  We are very happy that we got to spend time with your Dad at Laura’s wedding.  From his obituary and from knowing Pat, H, Laura and Jedd and meeting many of you, especially Jane, over the years we know how special he was to you.  It is obvious his influence and your memories of him will continue to bring him into your lives.

Rest in Peace Dr. Scanlon. You lived a beautiful life!

I'm so sorry to hear Paul has passed. Jim and I are grieving with you. Paul was such a sweet person and I remember him as a wonderful family man. I was also so impressed with how he and Jane were always doing so many things, coming up to St. Paul a lot to visit us, and then they came to my Father's (Carl Blomstrand) 90th birthday celebration in Chicago and sparked up the party. My parents loved Paul, too. Or sympathy is with you, Jane and family. Love, Carol

Dear Paul and family,

I am sorry to hear about your loss. My sympathy is with you at this time.

Warm Regards,

Irene Grossbach

"Uncle Paul", "Aunt Jane" and "the Scanlon kids" were as much a part of my growing up as were my Mom & Dad and Grandma & Grandpa. I just didn't see them as much. However, I will never forget the tall, curly haired guy with the moustache who was the most respected man of his generation that our fair city ever produced. All one had to do was mention "Dr. Paul" to any of his contemporaries and they immediately knew who you were talking about. So many memories come to mind but suffice to say we (I?) will never see his like again.

Godspeed, Uncle Paul and until we meet again, may the Good Lord hold you in the palm of His hand.

Our most sincere condolences on the loss of Paul.  Please know we are thinking of you in this difficult time.

With love from Michigan,

Erica Wehrwein & Family

Dear Scanlon family,

May you find solace in Paul's beautiful life, contributions and love of family that will be forever yours.

Warmest regards,

Bryan & Joan

Dear Jane and family.......we are holding you all close to our hearts and know that Paul is no longer suffering.  Take great comfort in your family being together.  Our thoughts and energy are with all of you.
