Dr. Gertrude “Truda” Tyce

Gertrude Mary “Truda” Tyce died Thursday, February 15, 2024. Gertrude Sidebottom was born in Wark, Northumberland. She was educated at the University of Durham in Newcastle-on-Tyne, England where she was awarded the degrees of B.Sc. and Ph.D. In 1952 she married Dr. Francis A.J. Tyce who subsequently was Superintendent and Medical Director of the former Rochester State Hospital.

In 1960, Dr. Tyce started a residency in the Biochemistry Department at Mayo Clinic. In 1972, she was appointed Consultant in Physiology at Mayo where she progressed to the rank of Professor of Physiology. She was a member of numerous professional organizations related to the field of the Neurosciences and she was author or co-author of some 202 publications in this field. She received numerous awards including the Distinguished Alumni Award from Mayo Clinic for 2003.

Her nonprofessional interests included Greco-Roman Archaeology and she was a member of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle-on-Tyne, England. She also enjoyed independent travel especially to the Middle East, gardening, and caring for her dogs. She was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church in Rochester and Rochester Rotary Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother, Edward John Sidebottom. She is survived by a son, John Christopher Tyce of Rochester.

The family extends a special thank-you to the staff of Charter House, especially the 4th Floor Supportive Care Staff and to Mary for her exceptional care. Also, to Nancy Johnson and Bernita Reding for their supportive, exceptional care throughout the years.

The Memorial Service for Dr. Gertrude “Truda” Tyce will be at 11:00AM on Saturday, April 13, 2024 at Calvary Episcopal Church with Rev. Beth Royalty officiating. Rev. Nick Mezacapa will co-officiate. Her ashes will then reside in the Calvary Episcopal Memorial Garden.

Memorials are suggested to the Mayo Clinic or to Calvary Episcopal Church of Rochester.
