Dr. Barbara F. Westmoreland
Dr. Barbara F. Westmoreland died at age, 85, on March 17, 2026. She was born in New York City, New Yor in 1940, to Wanda and Robert Edward Westmoreland, M.D. She graduated from Albermarle High School in Charlottesville, VA in 1957. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from Mary Washington University in Fredericksburg, VA in 1961 and the M.D. degree from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA in 1965. She interned at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville in 1956-1966. She did her Neurology residency at the University of Virginia from 1966-1970 and did a fellowship in Electroencephalography at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN in 1970-1971. She was appointed Consultant in Neurology at the Mayo Clinic in 1971 and was successively appointed Assistant Professor, Associate professor, and Professor of Neurology. She was Chair and Program Director of the Division of Clinic Neurophysiology. She retired in September 2010 as Emeritus Professor of Neurology.
She was certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, American Board of Qualification in Electroencephalography, American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine, and Subspecialty Certification in Clinical Neurophysiology by the Board of Neurology and Psychiatry. She has been past president of the American Epilepsy Society, American EEG Society, Central EEG Society, Mayo Chapter of Sigma XI, Mayo Chapter of the History of Medicine Society, Chair of the Clinical Neurophysiology Certification Exam of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Co-Chair of the Mayo Clinic Alpha Omega Alpha Association, Director of Mayo Clinic CME Courses in EEG, and Chair of the Mayo Clinic Emeritus Center in Rochester, Minnesota.
She has published 84 peer reviewed publications and 39 book chapters, authored or co-authored 5 editions of the Medical Neuroscience book, and has given numerous presentations at national and international meetings. She had a strong interest in teaching and education and received a number of education and teaching awards.
She is survived by her sister, Cynthia R. Westmoreland, and cousins Kathy Lohr and Don Warren. She was preceded in death by her brother, Robert, and her cousin Virginia Hickman.
