Dr. Alexander Schirger

Dr. Alexander Schirger, age 87 passed away on Thursday February 14, 2013 at Saint Mary’s Hospital on the feast day of Sts. Cyril and Methodius, patron saints of the Slavic peoples.

He was born on October 3, 1925 in Prague, Czechoslovakia to Alexius and Anna Schirger. He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, Prague in 1950. Dr. Schirger immigrated to the United States in 1951 and in 1953 began his career with the Mayo Clinic, eventually practicing in Vascular Medicine until his retirement in 2004.  On August 7, 1965, after 14 years of having been separated by the communist government of Czechoslovakia, he was reunited with and married Milada Kloubkova, of Prague, Czechoslovakia, at St. Augustine’s Church in St. Cloud, MN.  During his career, he served as President of the International Union of Angiology.  Care for his patients was a priority for him, and many of his patients became life-long friends.  Additionally, he loved to help young people develop their talents and careers.  In particular, he was happy to have the opportunity to help Czech and Slovak medical students and residents, providing clinical and research educational opportunities.  He was honored with the Tomas Masaryk award for his service to the Czech and Slovak people.  Dr. Schirger was a longtime member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. His faith in and love for Christ translated into loving service to family, friends, patients and anyone in need.

He is survived by his wife Milada, his son John (Zita) Schirger of Rochester, his daughter Annie (John) Mitchell of Omaha, four grandchildren Mary Jo, Rosie, Nathan, Christopher, a brother-in-law, Jan Kloubek of Prague, a niece, Lucie (Simon) Thomas and their children Sophie and Daniel of Plano, TX, and cousins Franta and Honsa Stach of Prague.

He is preceded in death by his parents, a sister-in-law Olga Kloubkova, and an uncle Dr. Anthony (Mary) Novotny.

The Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Visitation will be held from 5:00PM to 8:00PM on Monday, February 18, 2013 at the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Memorials are preferred to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Rochester, MN , Holy Name School in Omaha, NE and Trinity School at River Ridge in Eagan, MN.

To say that my family and I will miss Dr. Shirger dearly simply does not come close to honoring the contributions of his life.  We grieve as the world is worse off today without his presence.  Truly, he was a giant of a man and we are priveleged to have shared in his life. God willing, we look forward to being with him again soon.  Our deepest sympathy, thoughts and prayers are with the Shirger family.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this time.

May his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.  Amen.

Anna Krestyn and Family

Mrs. Schirger and John,

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your loved ones at this time.  Dr. Schirger was the most kind, generous christian man I have yet to encounter.  I have known him since the age of 8 or 9 years old, as he was a great friend to my father over the decades.  He was always ready and willing to help in times of need.  Dr. Schirger was instrumental in helping me to obtain a medical degree and provided wisdom and insight to me as my career progressed.  He has always been a loyal friend and advisor to me and I will miss him greatly. It gives me great comfort to know that he is now with the Lord.

Respectfully,

Pete

Dear John.

My sincerest condolences to you and your family regarding the passing of your father.  He was a great man and a Mayo institution!  I remember interacting with him as far back as early high school.  He took excellent care of my grandpa Red Moore for many years, and my family all appreciated his care very much.  Please take solace in the fact that he touched so many people and left such a strong legacy at Mayo.  Please let me know if there is anything I can do for you.

Sincerely,

Andy

Uprimnou soustrast od cele nasi rodiny.

Dear John and family

My thoughts and prayers are with you during this time. I very much enjoyed seeing Dr Alex's patients and always remembered that they all adored your father as their physician. He was caring and would even visit his patients at St Mary's (I have been the attending on 6-Dom in GI) that he admitted.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and the family

It has been a privilege to know Dr Schirger. When I was a young trainee in surgery in spite of our very brief encounter he was very keen to know my future plans and volunteer to talk to my contacts and help me advance my training in surgery. I will always remember and be most grateful for his kindness. He has been a real role model for an entire generation of phycisians on both sides of the Atlantic.

Dear Milada and kids;

My parents are good friends of yours, and I have fond memories of Dr. Schirger. When I was a teenager, I broke a toe and sprained an ankle playing football. The next morning, my mother called Dr. Schirger to ask his opinion of whom I should see for treatment. He just told us to come down to the clinic, and he would meet us at the door. If I remember correctly, I was whisked into a room where I was examined by the orthopedic department head, then had x-rays and was given the prognosis.  All in the span of no more than a half hour, and with no appointment!  That is just one small example of what Dr. Schirger's friends and patients meant to him, even if it wasn't in his area of expertise.  What a kind, gracious, humble man.

   Gob bless his soul.

Chris and Scott LaPree

To the family of Dr. Alexander Schirger!

On behalf of my family I send prayers and condolences to you.  My family joins in your grief over the death of your beloved.  I also send the promise of future prayers and Masses for his sake and the sake of you.

In 1995 Dr. Schirger was instrumental in accessing my father Art Greisen with the Mayo Clinic with its rich resources.  Dr. Schirger's intervention saved my father's life.  Without him, my dad would have died in 1995.  Instead, my father had a wonderful, rich life for another 7 years, passing away in 2002.

My mother, my siblings, and I have spoken often about the debt we owe to Dr. Schirger.  We have remembered, and will continue to remember him with fondness and deep appreciation for the gift he gave us.  This gratitude goes now with him to the Heavenly Gate ... our prayers stand alongside of him as he faces the Dtivine Physcian Jesus Chrirst, Risen in Glory!  We proudly acclaim that your Dr. Schirger was a holy, good steward in his life; and we petition our loving God to grant him the fullness of life and joy now at the Heavenly Banquet.

It is consoling to me to imagine my father greeting again Dr. Schirger with loving kindness and gratitude ... along with the hundreds (and perhaps thousands) of others whose lives were richer due to Dr. Schirger's skill, compassion, faith, and wisdom.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord!

May Dr. Schirger rest in peace!

Amen!
