Douglas J. Kliewer

Douglas J. Kliewer, 75, of Rochester, MN, passed September 6, 2022, of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) and gained his angel wings at home surrounded by his loving family.

Doug was born September 8, 1946, in Mt. Lake, MN, to Willard and Melrose Kliewer. He attended high school in Mt. Lake, MN, and culinary school in Florida, and he worked in the food service industry for his entire career, including serving as a chef at the Holiday Inn Mankato, MN. In addition, he co-owned The Answer bar and restaurant, known for their filet mignon, in Lake Crystal, MN. His career also extended to Gamble Robinson, U.S. Foods, and Reinhart Food Service.

Doug had two children, Kara and Kalli, with his first wife, Theresa. He married Carolyn Kragh on May 1, 1993, in Duluth, MN, where he gained three stepchildren, Kevin, Jackie, and Kellie.

Doug had a fun-loving personality and enjoyed socializing with family and friends. He was known for his professional organizational skills and for being a perfectionist in his work. Doug enjoyed cooking, woodworking, golfing, meticulously maintaining a beautiful lawn, spending time at his cabin on Lake Vermilion, and loved travel. He and Carolyn spent their winters in Lake Havasu, AZ, and Gulf Shores, AL.

Doug is survived by his wife, Carolyn Kliewer of Rochester; daughter, Kara Kliewer (Mike); stepson, Kevin Joki; stepdaughters, Jackie Louviere (Brent), Kellie Joki; grandchildren, Jordan, Danika, Dawson, and Aili; and five great-grandchildren. Condolences

The family of Douglas J. Kliewer has received the following condolences.

I am so sorry to learn of Doug's passing.  While I only knew him for a short time, I really enjoyed the conversations I had with him and Carol at the American Legion.  I will certainly miss seeing Doug at the Legion.  I will have a cigar in his memory.  Rest Easy, Doug.

Doug although it has been a few years since I have had the honor of being in your presence I will never forget your contagious giggle and your quick wittedness. I am so sad to hear of your passing. I know Kalli has been watching over you all for many years and I am sure she was waiting at the Pearly Gates to Welcome you home. Be ready because I’m sure she is ready to show you the ropes as you soar through heaven. I’m sure she has all of her favorite places to show you, visions that we are only able to dream of. Kalli finally has her Daddy with her.  I will never forget the day y’all moved to Mason City and I was “the first person that she met thanks to you and my Father. I felt so honored. I remember swinging on the tire swing at the park in Eastbrooke. I had my hair in braided pig tails and she wanted me to do her hair the same way. (I think we spent the next 365 days with our hair in braided pigtails ?. She was my sister I never had, she still is I miss her to this day. I think of Terri, Kara, you, Kalli and Jordan often. Give her the biggest hug from me and tell her that I can’t wait to see her again, whenever my time comes. Until we meet again, fly high beautiful angels ? ? PS for some reason every time I think of her I also think about celery and peanut butter and pretzel sticks. I have no idea why but there must be a reason ? someday it will come back to me. I know we used to use matches and light the end of our pretzels and pretend to smoke them because we wanted to be cool like our Mommas. ?haha. Well I could keep going but I think I have taken up most of this page. Fly high beautiful angels, until we meet again. ?Jenni Benson-Dusheck

We are so sorry to hear of Doug’s passing. We are not able to make his celebration of life. We would like to have an address for Carolyn, if someone could please pass that onto us. We dearly loved having Doug and Carolyn as neighbors, they were the best and we certainly do miss them. Your family is in our prayers, may you find comfort in your precious memories and peace in Gods love.

We were blessed to have lived next to Doug and Carolyn this past year. Getting to know them, spending time with them, and having them as part of our tiny community was so lovely. Doug and Carolyn quickly became an important and beloved part of our Beach Lane family.

Doug was a joyful, fun loving neighbor. We will miss Doug's playful ribbing, excellent food and generous spirit. In a time where it can be hard to build community, it was lovely to have Doug and Carolyn in our lives. We are so grateful to have Doug in our lives for the small amount of time that we did. I have no doubt that the smell of cigars will forever remind me of Doug.

Carolyn, our hearts are with you. Don't forget! We will always be your neighbors and are here for you.

We are so sorry to hear of Dougs health battle. Don and I have many fun memories with Doug  (and Carolyn). Our memories bring smiles to our hearts and out loud laughter. Doug was a very good man. We will miss him! Hugs to Carolyn and Dougs family.
