Dorothy E. Lassig

Dorothy Emma (Bintzler) Lassig

Dorothy Emma (Bintzler) Lassig, 100, died Wednesday, December 20th, surrounded by her family, at the Stewartville Care Center, where she had been residing for hospice cares for several days. Prior to this, she resided in her own home in Stewartville.

Dorothy was born on April 4th, 1923, on the family farm near Theresa, Wisconsin, to Irvin and Adela Bintzler. Dorothy had a difficult childhood, with her father leaving the family when Dorothy and her siblings were very young. A few years later, Dorothy’s mother also left the four children, and Dorothy and her siblings were separated between extended family members.

Dorothy attended rural grade school and graduated from Winnebago Lutheran Academy and attended Martin Luther College for one year before enlisting in the USNR (Navy WAVES) during World War II. During WWII, she spent time in Key West, at the navy base. After her discharge from the WAVES in 1945, she began teaching in a rural Lutheran grade school.

In 1947 Dorothy married Orville Lassig, and they farmed near Fond Du Lac, WI and raised seven children there. In 1962, the Lassig Family moved to a farm near Grand Meadow, MN, and their youngest child was born in Spring Valley, MN. Dorothy went back to school a few years later and obtained her LPN license, and worked at the Spring Valley Community Hospital, and the Ostrander and Stewartville Care Centers, retiring at the age of 75.

Orville passed away in 1977, and Dorothy moved to Stewartville in 1988. In her retirement, she enjoyed Elderhostel trips, volunteer work and service trips. She loved square dancing and attended many state and national conventions. She was an avid bowler, reader and bird watcher. Dorothy had several pets over the years and was a dedicated and adoring dog and cat owner.

Dorothy is predeceased by her husband Orville, son Douglas Lassig, granddaughter Vanessa Lassig, half sister Joyce, and brothers Robert and Reuben. Survivors include: Sons: David (Donnis) Lassig of Stewartville, MN, Dennis (Gloria) Lassig of Devils Lake, ND, Donald (Michele) Lassig of Pacific Grove, CA, Daniel Lassig (Pleasanton, CA); former daughter-in-law Clara Lim (California) and Daughters: Carole (Ken) Siems of Rochester, MN, Cathleen (Jay) Lorenz of Arlington, Washington State, and Cherie (Ted) Perzynski of Eyota, MN. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Dorothy’s family would like to thank the staff at the Stewartville Care Center and Heartland Hospice for the excellent care they took of Dorothy in her final days. Special thanks to Tina and Teresa with Comfort Health, Kathy with Visiting Angels, Stewartville Senior Dining delivered meals, and the VA Health Care System – all of whom provided support to Dorothy in staying in her home until just prior to her death. Dorothy was incredibly grateful for the near daily visits from her beloved mail carrier, Pete. It takes a village, and Dorothy created a village of those who provided care and support.

In honoring causes that were important to Dorothy, memorials are suggested to: Channel One Food Bank, The Humane Society, Paws and Claws, Camp Companion, or the Stewartville Senior Dining Meals on Wheels.

As per her wishes, burial will be at a forthcoming announced date in the Spring, at the Veteran’s Cemetery in Preston, MN.
