Dorothy Callahan

Dorothy Callahan, 92, of Rochester, died Thursday, October 4, 2018 at Charter House.

Dorothy was born March 3, 1926 to Alfred and Ellen (Hennessey) Hughes in Boston, Massachusetts. She graduated from Harvard University in 1947 with a bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry. She married John A. Callahan in West Roxbury on May 26, 1951. They moved to Rochester, Minnesota in 1952. Dr. Callahan died on March 31, 2007.

Dorothy was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church (now a Co-Cathedral). She was a committed volunteer in many areas, including Dodge-Fillmore-Olmsted Area Community Corrections, the Rochester Area Foundation, the League of Women Voters, St. Mary’s Auxiliary, Amnesty International, and the Reading Center. Both Dorothy and John became Oblates of St. John’s Abbey in Collegeville, MN, in 1955. She was on the Board of Trustees for the College of St. Teresa and she helped to create and directed the Rochester/Olmsted Community Housing Partnership.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Peter J. Callahan of Byron, Christopher J. (Madeleine) Callahan of Bloomington, IL, Paul J. (Julie) Callahan of Arlington, MA, Joan C. (Steven) Farrell of Brooklyn Park, Peggy (Mark Beckel) Callahan of Hinckley, Betsy Callahan of Clayton, WI; daughter-in-law, Jane Callahan of Rochester; ten grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Marie Morgan of Boston, MA; and two brothers, Archbishop Alfred C. Hughes, and Rev. Kenneth J. Hughes SJ. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, and her son, Mark.

The funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 13th at the Co-Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist with Archbishop Alfred C. Hughes, Rev. Kenneth J. Hughes SJ, and Rev. Msgr. Gerald A. Mahon officiating. . Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 12th in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Rochester.

Memorials are preferred to Seasons Hospice, Co-Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

So sorry you have lost your Mom. She was  a wonderful, knowledgeable woman and    a good patient in the dental chair.  Spence  thought a lot of her also.  Sorry I can't be there tomorrow.
