Darlyne Podein

Darlyne Avonne (Haugen) Podein, 81, died peacefully at her home on November 11, 2012, following a long battle with cancer.

Darlyne was born to Edwin O.E. and Marie (Anderson) Haugen on March 10, 1931 at home on the Haugen farm in Wanamingo Township, Minnesota. She was baptized and confirmed at Holden Lutheran Church and graduated from Kenyon High School in 1949.

Darlyne began working at Mayo Clinic in 1953. Her career there spanned 35 years, working and then training others in the Registration Department until her retirement from Mayo in 1991.

On October 24, 1964, Darlyne married Arthur C. Podein in Eyota. They moved to the Rushford area in 1967 and resided there until 1984 when they returned to the Rochester area. Art died on June 2, 1995 after a lengthy illness. After her husband’s death, Darlyne spent many hours volunteering at Hope Lodge, the Rochester Senior Center, and High Pointe, and continued connecting regularly with high school classmates, relatives, and friends.

Darlyne is survived by her sister, Elaine Grove of Zumbrota, sister-in-law Dorothy Haugen of Wilmington, NC, numerous nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, and beloved friend, Larry Holtegaard.

Darlyne was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Arthur Podein; infant son; brothers, Conrad O. Haugen and Ronald O. Haugen, brother-in-law, Arvin P. Grove; nephew, Eddie A. Haugen; grand-nephew Mark C. Haugen II.

A celebration of Darlyne’s life will be held at 11:00AM on November 21, 2012 at the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home (1119 11 1/2th Street SE Rochester, MN) with visitation held  from 9:30-11:00AM at the River Park Chapel previous to the service. Condolences

The family of Darlyne Podein has received the following condolences.

What a joy Dar was at Hope Lodge as a kind, caring and  understanding lady with a great sense of humor, who helped so many during their times of cancer treatment !  Dar was a wealth of knowledge about many things and was interesting and friendly.  We enjoyed her at Hope Lodge, as well as in our home, and any time that we had the priviledge of being around her.  She fought a gallent and hard fight and she will be missed.

To all who loved and cared for her, we offer our sympathy and prayers.

Lee and Judy Pearce

I am so sorry at your loss of Darlyne, a dear friend of my mother, Jeanette Rittenhouse, who worked with Dar at the Clinic for many years.  They remained good friends afterwards and Dar was a comfort to my mother and me in Mom's last years.  We always remarked that Dar never complained about - or even mentioned - her own health problems unless pressed, and then she passed them off quickly.  She was a wonderful person.

We were so sorry to hear about the passing of Dar.  She was a wonderful person and she meant a lot our family.  My mother and her were great friends for many years.  She had such a great spirit and was always so much fun to be around.  Our family has a lot of fond memories of her, and my mother especially enjoyed the late Christmas night get togethers they would have.  A lot of laughter coming from the kitchen in the wee morning hours!

We were all fortunate to have known her and have her in our lives.  We send out our deepest sympathies to Dar's family.  She will be missed by all.

The Tom and Ruth Comstock family.

I used to work at the salon that Darlyne frequented.  She was always so friendly and a joy to visit with.  My deepest sympathies to her loved ones.

Deepest condolences to Dar's family. She will be missed.

Dar was a friend through Mayo Friendship Club and always had a sunny attitude.

To Darlyne family.....I would like to express my sympathy to all of Dar's many family members.  I met many of you as I traveled to various places with Dar over the past few years.   She was always glad to visit with her many family members and her many friends.  To Elaine, I always enjoyed stopping in Zumbrota and be included in conversation and the joyous visits that you, Dar and I had.  Dar was always an inspiration at Hope Lodge.  We always called her our "Tuesday Volunteer", as she always came in the door with a smile and helped us out a lot in the office, plus made many a resident staying at Hope Lodge smile what with her wit, her personality, and her huge smile.  She will be sadly missed by many people and as a friend, I will miss her many conversations and things we did.  I will have many fond memories of Dar.
