Daniel L. Heins

Daniel Leon Heins, 69, of Champlin, MN, died July 28, 2020. He was born on December 29, 1950 in Rochester to Howard and Marian (Fitzpatrick) Heins. During his youth he was active in 4-H and FFA showing dairy cattle. He graduated from John Marshall High School and the University of Minnesota with a degree in Animal Science & Agronomy. While at the U of MN he was on the dairy cattle judging team, and later judged many county fair dairy shows. His career included seven years with the Minnesota Extension Service in Freeborn County. He enjoyed 38 years in insurance sales, the last 27 years with Oakwood Insurance, Anoka.

Thanks to excellent care he received through the Mayo Clinic, Dan survived numerous health challenges related to diabetes. Among them was receiving a kidney transplant almost 12 years ago from a generous friend named Nancy. He considered himself the luckiest man to receive the gift.

Dan was known for his laugh and positive attitude. He loved finding nice “old stuff” at a bargain, old-time and country music, enjoying a few beers and spending time with friends particularly his U of MN DTS brothers on their annual Memorial Day trip.

On November 24, 1979 he married Rosemary Koziolek in New Richland, MN. During their married life they lived in Albert Lea, New Ulm, Andover and last year moved to Champlin. She survives him as well as their son, Jeffrey (Heather Campbell), Menomonie, WI; and his mother, Marian Heins of Rochester; Dan’s siblings, Marie (Dennis) Brom, Castle Rock, CO, Tim Heins, Spring Valley, MN and Carol (Pete) Pyfferoen, Oronoco. He was preceded in death by his dad, Howard.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, August 4, 2020 at 11 am with visitation one hour prior to service at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Rochester. Burial will be at the Oronoco Cemetery. Information on live streaming of service is available from www.mackenfuneralhome.com. Please wear masks.

Memorials are preferred to Minnesota 4-H Foundation State Fair Building Improvement Project (makingagift.umn.edu/give/fund.html?id=Support4-H) or donors choice.

Condolences

The family of Daniel L. Heins has received the following condolences.

Rosi,

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this extremely  difficult time.

    Sharon Perry Batterman

I am very sorry to hear about Dan.  He was a great person and really was a role model for me and so many of us in the Freeborn Co 4-H program.  He encouraged us to get involved and have fun doing it!  He had a special place for us dairy kids since he was a "dairy kid" as well.  We had a great time on the various adventures, be it judging trips, state fair, AKSARBEN, Washington DC etc.  It was also so nice running into him when I moved to New Ulm, which is were I still live!

I know many, many years ago you gave Heidi the wedding card that my mom gave you and Dan.  Heidi got it out and we all gave it to Beth's daughter, Amber when she got married 7 or 8 years ago.  It was a neat gift and she absolutely "loved" the regifting of grandma's gift.

You and Jeff have my sympathy.  Dan is just one of those people that I think of and smile because he was truly a happy funny guy who really was a people person!  Take care!  I will send a memorial gift in Dan's name to the 4-H State Fair building fund.

Lisa Miller Schwartz, New Ulm, MN

Dan,

He was a very special kind person and I will miss you and your great sense of humor and optimism!

I'm sorry to hear about the passing of Daniel.  Sympathy to the family during this difficult time.

Patti Blount (N2 shift)

for the family and friends of Dan Heins:

My deep and profound sympathy to Dan's family.

A lifetime goes so fast. I remember meeting

Dan when he turned 9 and joined the Cascade Cruises

4-H Club. With his family Dan was a premier Holstein

cattle exhibitor. While he worked hard and won many

Championships I always noted his willingness to share

his knowledge with fellow 4-H and FFA members. Dan's

smile and laughter that we all reflect on when we

think about Dan through his lifetime was a wonderful

compliment to the wisdom that Dan shared with those

around him from an early age.

Respectfully Submitted,

Don Untiedt

Sad to hear about Dan.  Great college memories of Rosie and Dan.  Sue

Dear Rosie and family,

My sympathies to all of you!!  I was very surprised to learn of Dan's passing while reading obituaries today.  I have so many fond memories of him especially during his years in Extension which I was privileged to work with many of those young professionals--and had the joy of knowing him as your husband and a fellow resident of Anoka County!!  I always admired his sense of humor, positive attitude and love of life inspite of his health challenges.  He will be missed.  A big hug to you.  I'll try to live stream the service on Tuesday.

Our hearts saddened when we learned that Dan left our sight but I know heaven had a joyous day as Dan entered our Father's kingdom.

We met Dan shortly after moving into Andover 20+ years ago. Dan was a delightful neighbor who quickly became a friend. One never knew what shenanigans he would be up to but you could always count on him to lend a helping hand.  Our prayers for the family to find comfort in all the wonderful memories Dan has left us.

Blessings

Virginia & John

I first met Dan when as a young man my sister Nancy and I sang in he and Aunt Rosemarys wedding.  It was a great day and as I recall I enjoyed being there.  I make that comment because as a young man in general, going to your Aunts wedding may not be high on your list of fun activities!  I vividly recall dancing to a polka with my mother Evelyn.  That was even fun!!  I now realize why I had so much fun that day.  Dan was a fun person.  He was easy to be around, easy to talk to and always had that twinkle in his eye!  He will be missed but not forgotten!

Doug Nickerson

My condolences on the passing of your beloved Dan. May he rest in peace.

Rosi, my sympathy to you, Jeff and Dan's entire family. I'm so sad ...but I believe there's an amazing, joyous celebration going on in heaven due to Dan's arrival! Can you hear it? I could always count on Dan for a laugh, some mischief and fun! He was one of a kind!

Praise the Lord for Dan and the gifts he shared with so many of us! He will be missed.

God's peace and comfort be with you.

Hugs and love, Kathy

I have very fond memories of Uncle Dan.  He always had a smile, despite what life threw at him.  Always was interested in me and what I was up to.  His cheery disposition was always a welcome sight.  You will be missed, Uncle Dan!

Rose, Jeff and family;

We have known Dan for about 15 years now and were blessed to know him...That smile and that “laugh”..His positive outlook was contagious... We will never forget all the times he would ask us to stop by his office because he made “Cookies”..How could you not go for those delicious treats. Dan, you will be missed.  Thank you Dan for all the positiveness..Love you and God Bless you always Tina and Lenny Shea

I've had the pleasure of working with Dan as his helpdesk person for over 10 years. His bright and positive outlook on life was not only infectious but simply inspiring in every way to me. He was always so grateful and cheerful no matter what challenges he had to overcome. Although I never actually had the honor of meeting Dan in person, we had countless long conversations over the phone through the years, allowing me to learn so much about him and gain a great respect for him. I am saddened to hear of his passing and would like to send my most heartfelt condolences to his friends and family, as I know this loss will impact them greatly. You will be missed Dan.

Your Friend, Melinda
