Dan was a proud and loving father to Adam, Andrea, Evan, and Ryan.  He and wife Carol enjoyed taking the family camping, hiking, biking, and many other activities.  He lived to explore the outdoors, participate in sports, read, tinker, write, and restore prairie habitats. Dan never missed an opportunity to take his grandchildren on adventures and to watch them discover new things.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carol’s father Gerald Wollenhaupt; brother Richard, brother-in-law Jeff Filkins, and other beloved family members.

Condolences

The family of Daniel A. Johnson has received the following condolences.

Carol, Adam, Megan, Andrea, Evan, Dee, Ryan, Erica, Skylar, Baya, Annabelle, Charlotte, Emma, Nolan and Mabel,

Dan, your soul mate, your dad and grandpa was an amazing man. We met your family in one of the most intense, scary and complex situations of your lives and we felt instantly comfortable and welcomed as if we had been part of the family for years. Dan was always active, an avid tinkerer, collector, teacher, community volunteer, adventurer, traveler, fixer, a dedicated coffee connoisseur and grandpa extraordinaire. I appreciated his hearty appetite, which I have been informed is a Johnson trait, his smile and twinkle in his eyes. Above all what stands out for me is that Dan loved his family, he loved you Carol and he would go the extra mile in whatever capacity he could. Our hearts go out to all of you….with much love and giant hugs! Xoxo

So sorry to hear Dan's sudden passing. We were unable to travel back to Minnesota in time for his funeral. It was so nice to see the family spoke so highly of Dan. Mary and I got to know Dan and Carol when we bowled together in the IBM Early Bird bowling league together. Our team was the "Loons". Dan often rushed to the bowling center just in time for his turn to bowl. We would frequent the Wong Cafe after bowling for a "diced chicken subgum" and black mushroom soup. Dan and Carol were my US citizenship character sponsors in 1980. They were also our son's god parents. Since the Johnsons moved to Eyota, we heard good things about Dan advocating for investing in Education. It's so good to see and hear his children and sibbling spoke so highly of Dan. What an inspirational service to say goodbye to Dan to be with our creator! Shalom...

So sorry to hear of Dan’s passing!  Memories of Dan in high school are great - esp. his smile!

Carol, Adam, Andrea, Evan, Ryan, and grandkids,

My deepest sympathy for your loss.  Dan was an exceptional person and great friend.  I know how much his family meant to him.  He made that very clear in the many stories he shared with me.

I posted my prior message on Facebook, but I don't have that many FB followers who knew Dan so I want to share it here, too.

Sorry to hear of Dan's passing.  I think I only ran into him once since we retired.

I never go under the old railroad bridge on Hwy 14 without thinking of him and living out in that area.

His bike rides where he would check the wind and always keep it behind him were an inspiration on how to make staying healthy more fun.

ciao, Rob

Carol and the whole Johnson's Family,

It was devastated and totally lost it when one of our peers shared the news of Dan's passing with me. Having worked for me at IBM, I can definitely say the world has lost a wonderful, thoughtful, generous, excellent Mentor, and a very respected human being. My sincere sympathies and condolences to the whole family.   May His Soul Rest Peaceful in the Heavens.

My deepest condolences to Dan’s family and friends. I had many good conversations with him at those IBM get-togethers over the years when I would tag along with my dad. He was such a kind human. I know he will be greatly missed by many.

I lost a very dear friend last week. I worked closely with Dan for many years at IBM in Rochester, MN. His expertise focused on detailed instructions for installs and upgrades of IBM's servers. My role involved developing applications that generated those instructions. Besides many deep technical discussions, we also shared countless personal experiences. Dan was a hiker and a cyclist, with a love of the outdoors. He was also a dedicated father and grandfather. We had a lot of shared interests. For several years now, I have been holding monthly gatherings for ex-coworkers. Dan was a regular participant at these get-togethers and it is hard to believe he will no longer be there to share his words of wisdom.

I was expecting to have many more years of shared stories and experiences with you, Dan. I realize that you didn't have a choice, but uou ended this adventure far too soon. Farewell, my friend.

 Dear Carol,

We were so sorry to hear about the sudden passing of Dan.  It certainly sounds like he had a wonderfully full life and an amazing wife and family.

I wish we could have gotten to know him better.  Our thoughts are with you and your family.

Love and hugs,

Tara

I’m so sorry to hear about Dan’s passing.  My deepest sympathy to the family.  My prayers ask our Father God to keep you all in his care and give you comfort at this difficult time.

With our deepest sympathy to you all in this sudden loss. Dan was such a great brother, husband & father and will be missed by so many.

Great man and leader. Very fond memories of him while in Boy Scouts. He will be greatly missed by those who knew him. I couldn’t picture him any other way then with that hat on! I am glad I got to know him and spend time with him. To the family, I cannot even imagine your loss, I hope you all have  time to spend with each other and have time to grieve and heal as a family.

To Carol and family - so sorry for your loss. You have my most sincere condolences.

So sorry to hear of Dans passing. He was such a nice guy. I send my prayers and love to all of you!

Carol and family,

We are so saddened to hear of Dan’s sudden passing. It was always such a joy to visit with Dan and you in the past and keep posted on our children’ lives at Dover Eyota Schools. Dan was such a faithful supervisor of Open Gym at the school for kids and adults to enjoy. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time in saying goodbye to a husband, father, grandfather, and a friend to so many in our community.

Carol and Family:

I was so shocked to hear of Dan's passing. It is hard to believe.

Though we have not seen each other much in the last years, the memories are sharp and clear. Always a good man, husband, father and friend.

He will be missed by many.

To you, Dan.............Fair winds, and following seas!

So sorry for your families loss. I knew Dan from our wrestling community in Dover-Eyota. He was always very supportive of the program and never seemed to miss a dual. Always a positive, enlightening person. Always came away from a conversation with him feeling great. You always knew Dan was in the house with his signature hat! He was an asset to the community and will surely be missed.

From our family to yours he has gone to a better place. I am sure he will be wearing that hat up in heaven!

Hi Johnson family,

Very sad to hear the news of Dan's passing. We worked together at IBM Rochester and Dan was one of the kindest, smartest, most caring people around. We send our deep sympathies.

Carol and family,

I was one of those guys that played basketball for decades at the REC center (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday for most of those decades). Dan was so reliable and regular (if Dan wasn't there you'd almost worry). I was also fortunate to work just down the hall from Dan for many years too (sharing a ride to basketball with Dan now and then). I first met Dan when he was volunteering with bike rides around Rochester (back the 1970s) like the Centurian. He wore those bike riding caps way back then (pre-helmet?). Also got to see a few Dover-Eyota athletic events with Dan where Dan could use his life time activities pass to attend for free (Dan was awarded the pass for his years of tireless dedication/volunteerism to Dover-Eyota schools). I got to see Dan so often/regular and spend so much time with him over the years at basketball that he was really like family. Dan had some basketball moves that only Dan could pull off.  Regardless, Dan always made your day better and he was so darn humble. So sad for you and your family to be missing Dan as he was a great great man. RIP Dan.

Carol and Family,

Very sorry to hear of Dan's passing. We're sure your family has many fond memories of the joy he brought to each of you.

Praying that our Lord will comfort you at this time.
