Dale “Toby” Alan Deters

Dale “Toby” Deters, 71, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, July 31, 2017 of natural cause.

He was born on March 14, 1946 to William “Arvid” and Olga (Pederson) Deters in Caledonia, MN.

Growing up in Caledonia, Dale attended St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran School and graduated from Caledonia High School in 1964, and then enlisted in the Army serving from 1964 until 1971.  Dale then attended Winona State College and St. Paul Vocational School graduating as an Electrical Technician.  On November 27, 1971 Dale married Toni Marie Spaniol.   They moved to Rochester in 1974, where Dale worked for IBM for 25 years and where they also raised their family. They later divorced.

After retirement in 1999, Dale volunteered for 10 years  with the American Red Cross of Rochester traveling to numerous disaster areas starting with Hurricane Katrina.  He received numerous acknowledgements and accommodations for his service.

Dale was a family man, loving spending time with his children and grandchildren, sharing their lives with anyone who would listen!  He enjoyed many meals and conversation at the Canadian Honker.

He is survived by two sons; Matthew (Geneva) and Joseph (Kayla) both of Rochester and one daughter Kari (Mathew) Busch of Oronoco; nine grandchildren; five brothers; Steve (Melanie) of Atlanta, GA, Terry (Judi) of Phoenix, AZ, Thomas (Jan) of Brownsville, MN, John (Michelle) of Forest Lake, MN, Mark (Jan) of Apple Valley, MN; one sister Ruth (Gary) Masurka of Apple Valley, MN; and one Aunt, Henrietta Deters (100) of New Orleans, LA.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorial  Service will be held at 11:00am, Monday, August 7, 2017 at Resurrection Evangelical Lutheran Church at 4520 19th Avenue NW, Rochester, MN.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the services.  Interment will be at 3:00pm, Monday in Evergreen Cemetery in Caledonia, MN.

Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society Relay for Life, Olmsted County or Resurrection Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Condolences

The family of Dale “Toby” Alan Deters has received the following condolences.

Please know how sorry I was to learn that Toby had passed away.  I have so many fond memories of our dear neighbor.  I will be forever grateful that God led us to our home on Cascade Street.  Toby and Matt were the first people to greet us when we moved there.  Toby was always there to lend a hand if needed or play basketball with Ethan. His memory will forever be special to Ethan and me.  I will hold all of his special family in prayer.  God bless you today and always!!

Julie and Ethan

So sorry to hear of Dale's passing. May God give you all peace, knowing he now is enjoying his heavenly home.

We want to express our sympathy to the Deters family.  We knew "Toby" casually as neighbors but found him warm in his welcome to us as we moved into the neighborhood.  Please know that you are in our thoughts and prayers and may the God of all comfort bless you with His presence and His promises as you cling to Him.

Sorry for your loss. May you find comfort at John 5:28,29 " Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his (Jesus) voice and come out." Please accept my deepest sympathy, and for more comforting information you may refer to jw.org.

My sympathies to Tom & Jan & the entire Deters family.I too lost a brother almost seven years ago & it still does not seem real.Toby's smiling face was the last guy from home that I saw at Ft. Leonardwood,Mo.He was soon to be going home & I was just beginning my Army times.RIP my friend.

I attended high school with Toby and well remember the fun we had. I can see those bright mischievous brown eyes , freckles pleasantly sprinkled on his face and ready to share something that would make us laugh. These endings can leave the rest of us so easily a bit bewildered and confused...combined with all sorts of memories. I send blessings and sympathy to his family and community at this time of loss.

Our deepest sympathies to the Deters family. I worked, golfed, bowled, and played softball with Dale. I have many great memories, but I will always remember him coming to the bowling alley and getting his ball out of the freezer compartment of the refrigerator that was in the box of his pickup. Dale always kept things interesting and entertaining. We will be out of town on a prior commitment, but you will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

Gene and Sharon Warnken

My sympathy to the entire Deters family.  I was a grade school classmate with Dale for eight years at St. John Lutheran School. I greatly enjoyed the time spent at the Deters home on the edge of Caledonia during the years as birthdays were celebrated or just getting together for some outdoor activities.  Although our paths crossed only a few times in later life, I cherish those fond memories of the early years.  May our gracious Lord grant comfort to each and every family member with the assurance of life eternal through our Lord Jesus Christ as we all look forward to a grand reunion with our Lord in heaven.

Eternal blessings through Christ.  James Plitzuweit

You all have my sympathy. Going to miss not see lights on and knowing Toby is there. Gods peace is with him now.

I enjoyed weekly conversations with TOBY  since we moved back to the Midwest four years ago, catching up on our kids and recently, his health concerns.

Toby will be greatly missed as my Rochester best friend having been across the street neighbors for almost ten years, but friends forever.
