Curt H. Mathiowetz

Curt Mathiowetz, 64, of Rochester, MN, died unexpectedly on Saturday March 10, 2018 in San Angelo, Texas.  He had been in Texas to do one of his favorite things:  visit his son Bradley and watch him play baseball with his Angelo State University team.

Curtis Harold Mathiowetz was born on July 26, 1953 in Sleepy Eye, MN to Leo and Marie (Kachelmeier) Mathiowetz.  After graduating from Wabasso High School in 1971, he attended Moorhead State University, Minnesota and North Dakota State University, graduating in 1976.  While working for IBM in Rochester, he completed his Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of MN.  He retired in 2011 after a 36 year career at IBM, in Rochester, where one of his proudest accomplishments was being a member of the Blue Gene Super Computer team.

He married Maryanne Mullins on April 11, 1987, at Pax Christi Church in Rochester, MN.   Curt and Maryanne raised their three children in Rochester, and spent many hours traveling to enjoy their kids’ baseball, hockey, soccer, basketball, football, and cross country activities.

He will be deeply missed by his wife Maryanne, two daughters, Stephanie (Kirk) Tisher of Bloomington, Amy (fiancé Colin O’Keefe) of St. Paul, and son, Bradley; as well as his sisters Pat (John) Gebhart, Yvonne (Brian) Johnson, Cheryl (Tom) Luze, and brother Steve (Candy); and many nieces and nephews.  He is preceded in death by his father, mother, and nephew David.

Curt enjoyed being outdoors biking long distances on the trails and back roads around Rochester, gardening, creating wood furniture and other projects with and for his kids, growing his collection of music and sharing it with good friends at The Clan gatherings, and recently was learning to play the guitar.   He will especially be remembered for his sense of humor and ability to make others laugh along with him.

A funeral Mass to celebrate the life of Curt will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 17, 2018 at Resurrection Church in Rochester, MN with Rev. Peter Schuster officiating.  Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 16, 2018 at Macken Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Condolences

The family of Curt H. Mathiowetz has received the following condolences.

Dear Amy and the entire family,

My heart has been heavy every day thinking of your loss and grief. I love you so very much and cannot fathom what you are going through. I just wanted to share some comforting passages with you in your time of healing.

John 11:25-26 - Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me shall live even though they die; and whoever lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?” “Yes, Lord,” she replied, “I believe that you are the Son of God, who is come into the world.”

John 16:33- “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

??What a comfort to have the everlasting life message of Easter right around the corner for you in this time of hardship. Your family continues to be in my prayers daily.

Love,

Anna Marsh and family

Our deep condolences for your loss. Curt was awesome to work with for so many years. His dedication to help everyone all the time was just continually amazing. That said, his face always shined most when he shared bicycle stories/advice with me and talking about Brad's baseball games.

Thomas and Coleen Liebsch

My deepest sympathy on the loss of Curt from this world.  I've knows him as a colleague and a friend for many years and he is truly one of the nicest and best people I have known in my lifetime.  Always there for support and questions - always there for really anything a person needed from him.  I'm deeply saddened by this news and my heart goes out to all the family and friends who were lucky enough to have known or been touched by Curt's life.  He will truly be missed by the world!

Maryanne, So sorry to hear this news. My deepest sympathy and prayers for you and your family during this difficult time.

My condolence to the family of Curt and I was sorry to see the notice of his unexpected death. I first met Curt when he started working at IBM in the CQRL department. We worked  together on various CQRL projects over the next 15 years and I always enjoyed working with Curt during this time. Sincerely Cletus Harry

I was both shocked and saddened to learn of Curt's passing.   I was an IBM colleague for the final 5 years of his career.  He was a brilliant engineer but an even finer gentleman.  Please accept my condolences

Dear Mathiowetz family,

I admired Curt immensely. Every time I met with him over the past four years of dating Amy, I learned a little bit more about his childhood, adulthood, and most current life as a retiree. I still remember seeing the friendliest smile as we shook hands for the first time. I thought, this man is full of interesting stories and knew we were going to get along just fine, and we sure did. I cry as I write this because he became another father figure to me – someone who I could sit with for hours and talk about his interest in music and electrical engineering and how the two related. We discussed his life growing up on a farm and his career at IBM. We talked about baseball and sports, and while he knew I didn’t know much about either, without batting an eye, he always explained things in a way I could relate to and understand. I rode in his BMW, ate Hardy’s bbq, went on long bike rides, and he even taught me how to swing a bat. He was also very interested in my life story, and we grew closer every time we met. I don’t know, and will never know what he planned to say about me during his daughter's wedding, but I do know it would have been very thoughtful, kind, and from his heart – he always put so much time, effort, and care into everything he did. I will make sure to take everything I learned from you with me as I grow older and older with your daughter, and while I wish you would be there to meet our kids, I know you will be there with us in spirit and will guide us every step of the way.

Love,

Colin
