Clara Mae Bonin

Clara Mae Bonin, longtime Rochester resident, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2024 at Beautiful Minds Assisted Living in Chandler, AZ at the age of 99.

Clara Mae Huber was born on October 1, 1924 in Farley, IA to George and Molly (Hill) Huber, on the family farm. She married Arthur Bonin of Minneapolis, MN on May 28, 1949 in Ryan, IA. Together they raised four children. Along with raising the family, she worked for the Kahler Hotel in Rochester in the Elizabethan Room as a waitress. She was a devout Catholic and a longstanding member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. She had a close special relationship with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her children Sue (Tom) St. George of Rochester, Mark Bonin of Mesa, AZ, sister-in-law Delores Huber of Delhi, IA, grandchildren Molly (Ryan) McHenry, Tully St. George, Sam (Ladis) Bonin, Kaite (Nate) Cardew, Megan Bonin, Maddie Bonin, Ellie Bonin, Phil (Katie) Koessler, 6 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and ex-daughters-in-law Mary Sue Bonin and Maria Resner.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, 8 siblings, son Loras, and daughter Mary Claire.

The Memorial Service for Clara will be held on Saturday, March 9, 2024 at 11:00AM in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home in Rochester. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the chapel.

There will also be a Funeral Mass on June 29, 2024 at 10:30AM at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Ryan, IA with interment at nearby Calvary Cemetery.

We are very sorry for the loss of your beloved Clara Bonin condolences! We had a great time with her at Sam's house many times! R.I.P. she always said take care of the bees for her!

I had the honor of knowing Clara and such a wonderful person. I adored her along with her friendship.  My condolences to the family.

I treasure the many fond memories made while working with Clara at the Town House Restaurant. She was a very kind, caring and hardworking waitress...a role model for all. Sending thoughts, prayers and sympathy to the entire Bonin family.

Sorry to hear of the loss of Clara. Plenty of old memories from my early days in rochester growing up and knowing the whole clan. Wish I could attend the celebration of life in March,but I live in Fl now.
