Chetan Offord – Byron
Chetan Paul Offord, 37, of Byron died Saturday August 29, 2015 at Mercy Medical Center in Mason City, Iowa following a heart attack.
Chetan was born January 18, 1978 to Kenneth and Janice (Johnson) Offord in Rochester, MN. He graduated from Byron High School in 1996 and from St. John’s University in Collegeville, MN in 2000 with a degree in Mathematics. At the University of Colorado Boulder he received a master’s degree in Applied Mathematics.
Chetan was currently employed as a research mathematician in Molecular Medicine at Mayo Clinic. This work focused on cancer related investigations. He had a creative and critical thinking approach to challenging problems and was highly valued by his collaborators.
His leisure activities involved playing and coaching youth and traveling soccer. At Byron High School he was the soccer team’s first goalie. His gentle and engaging way of dealing with children made him a respected coach. He played goalie on many Rochester adult teams where his tenacious and competitive spirit shined. Serious card playing, computer gaming and fishing for northerns in Canadian waters complimented his happy nature.
His body was donated to the Iowa Donor’s Network from which many transplant recipients will benefit.
He is survived by his long time and extremely special soulmate Elisabeth Skoro of Rochester; his parents; maternal grandmother Cleo Johnson of Rochester; brother Josiah of Minneapolis; brother Jess and Grace (Davis) Offord and their children Landon, Stella and Clay, and many other relatives.
In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to St. John’s University in Collegeville, MN or for scholarships to the Byron Youth Soccer program.
Visitation will be on Wednesday Sept. 2nd from 5-8 PM at Macken Funeral Home River Park Chapel, 1105 12th St. SE in Rochester. A funeral Mass will be held Thursday Sept. 3rd at 11 AM at Pax Christi Catholic Church, 4135 18th Ave NW in Rochester, with a one hour visitation before the service. Condolences
The family of Chetan Paul Offord has received the following condolences.
I am so sorry to hear of Chetan's passing, and will keep him and your family in my prayers. I worked with Chetan at Mayo, and remember his brilliance, warmth and fun attitude...even when he didn't end up with the highest Wonderlic score of the group :) It's been a few years since I was in Rochester, but I remember his glowing face as he talked about Elisabeth, she brought such joy to his heart.
My sincerest condolences,
Rae (Myers) Janecke
Elisabeth,
I am so sorry to hear about Chetan. I have so many great memories of stories you would tell about him. I never had the opportunity to meet him, but I feel as if I know about his wonderful personality through all of your stories. I want you to know that I am thinking of you and hope that you will find some peace in the years that you were able to share with Chetan. Know that you are in my thoughts!

Chew was a very special person and much beloved by his teammates and friends. I had the honor and privilege of playing soccer with Chew on many different teams and he was an excellent leader on and off the field. He brought light and goodness to many people's lives and he will be sorely missed.
I was so saddened to hear the news of Chewy's passing. While I didn't know Chewy on a deep level, it only took me a few minutes to realize he was a person that was patient , kind, and incredibly intelligent. He was someone that you liked right off the bat for their easy-going nature, smile, and the air of positivity that surrounded him.
It's been a long time since our time at CSB/SJU but the things I remember about Chewy are the things I see repeated in the other condolences. He was really a great guy who was taken away way too soon. As I read his obituary, it came as no surprise that he was using his many talents to make the world a better place and that even in his death, he found a way to give to others.
To Elisabeth and all of Chewy's family and friends, I am so sorry for your loss. Please know that his kindness and infectious smile are remembered (and will always be remembered) by those who knew him, even for a brief amount of time.

A Bennie that Chewy (very) patiently tutored in Astronomy.
Dear Liz and the Offord Family,
If we measure true wealth by richness of our friendships, Chetan has been a priceless gift in my life. I was fortunate to share four years with him at Saint John's and a much deeper appreciation of the friend I had in the years that followed. The warm smile, gentle personality and powerful intellect that Chew shared with the world were complimented by a terrific sense of humor. This is a man who has made me laugh until I cried and tonight has made me laugh through my tears. The pain my wife and I feel at his loss can only be equalled by the thankfulness we have for sharing a part of our lives with him. There are truly no words to convey how sorry I feel for you at this tremendous loss, but please know that the lives and the hearts Chetan has touched are without number. The gifts he has given us will continue to benefit our lives long after he has left us.
With deep respect and sympathy,
Hughie
So sorry for your loss, Jan and Ken. Your son was quite a talented guy.
It was so unfortunate that his time was short. Take Care, Mary Beard
I couldn't believe my eyes when I read of Chetan's death in the paper last night. My heart is breaking. How sad for a young and vibrant young man to leave this world so soon. I remember him helping me with backlog in Hematology research. I enjoyed him so much! He was always so funny but also professional and smart! My heartfelt condolences to you Jan and Ken and family. You are in my prayers. Carol Shipman
Elizabeth, it was with shock that we read of your loss! We can only imagine what you and his family are feeling.

Sending deepest sympathy to a wonderful family. Remember Chetan as a young child in Music class. He was always sooo kind, helpful and such a joy to teach. He had many talents. He will be sharing those talents to many new Angels. Sarah Johnson
Offord family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you. I was a high school classmate of Cheetan's. He was a smart person, as his research work at Mayo shows. Most importantly, he was incredibly kind. He was easy going, always smiling and always had a kind word for everyone. May you find comfort and peace at this sad time.
I consider myself blessed to have had the opportunity to have known Chew. I remember when Bryan told me that he had solved our keeper problem and introduced me to Chew several years ago. It wasn't long until he was running the back line and posting shut outs to help make our Friday nights and Sunday afternoons memorable and fun. Chew was so much more than an awesome goalkeeper for us. It didn't take long to see that he was a great man with a kind heart and a smile for everyone. One of the things I truly appreciate about Chew was his calming force amongst friends and his ability to temper arguments and disagreements. You couldn't ask for better insight and advice from a man who was routinely the voice of reason. He always made sure to make you feel valued when he shared conversation with you, and he was always looking out to be sure everyone was included in the group. He is sadly missed by so many. My heart goes out to Liz, his family, and those closest to him. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
Words are a poor substitute to express my condolences to Chetan and his family, and close friends. I'll try anyway.
I know I don't have half as much time as most of the people here with him, but there is one time that I will always remember. A few years back, I was flying into MSP late at night and very tired. Chew landed on the same flight. I can't remember the trip or the purpose. All I remember was the car ride down we took together. We talked about everything, from soccer to video games to life to science to past to future.
It was the shortest trip I ever took from the cities to Rochester. It was one of those rare conversations that immerses you into a different dimension where the only thing that matters is the other person with you. I wish that were my longest ride from Rochester to the cities...
Cheers to a really great guy, humble strong and present. You will be missed,
Amine
On behalf of my family and the BHS Class of 1996, my prayers go out to your family. Chetan was always a kind kind person and loved to laugh. God bless your family.

Elisabeth Skoro and Offord Family,
I heard of Cheton's death tonight. I am sorry for your loss, and I send many prayers your way. I was a floor mate of his on Mary Three as freshmen at SJU. While Cheton and I were not close friends, I remember him fondly. He was a great guy who was always smiling (and wearing soccer shoes!). Our floor as freshmen was a great place where we all hung out and got to know each other. I am still amazed at his intelligence, especially anything related to math.
I know he will be missed.

Dear Jan and Ken
We are so extremely saddened to hear of your loss of Chetan. There are not adequate words to express our sympathy. May God give you peace and your memories bring you joy for the wonderful son you raised.
Gary and Sonja
sincerest sympathies to the Offord family. I was a classmate, and even though I didn't know him well, Cheetan was always kind and a friend to everyone. The Class of 96 lost a good one with Cheetan. My prayers are with your family during this very difficult time and may the Lord bring you comfort and peace in the days to come.
sincerely,
Melissa (Mertes) Gritzmaker
Offord family,

Jim & Jan Barayasarra and Family1
I am truly sorry your family has had to experience this terrible tragedy. Loosing a child is devastating, no matter what their age. Chetan was always so pleasant and easy to visit with. We will miss his easy smile, and his stopping by or visits with Duane. We pray that your aching hearts will soon be comforted by prayers from all that care about your family.
God Bless!
Ken and Jan,
We are so sorry for your loss. You are in our thoughts and prayers. May your memories comfort you during this difficult time. May it be a source of inner strength to know that there's a loving God watching over you, and that throughout this time of need, he will be by your side. Our deepest sympathy, God Bless.
Chew
The thought of you being no longer with us makes no sense...but then again it never will. It was a privilege playing defense in front of you. You always had a positive attitude, bright smile, and quiet strength. I enjoyed running into you at the Harwick over lunch...we always had a few laughs. May you rest easy my friend. Prayers to your family. May you run in heaven with God's love and forever be a shining light to the world below.
Abbie
classmate of Chetan's at SJU, I had the privilege of seeing Chetan just over a year ago after not seeing him for a couple years before that. It was great to catch up with him then and he hadn't changed, still the smart, funny guy I knew in college. Sorry I didn't get to see him more.
In college, we were playing indoor intramural football, and we needed a sub. Chetan, not being a football player per se, was still willing to help out. well, wouldn't you know it, he tears his knee up pretty bad trying to make a play. I felt awful, but he didn't seem bitter (at least not to me) He was always willing to help, he was a great guy.
I will miss you Chew, hope you can find a good 500 game up there.
Dear Elisabeth and Chetan's family,
I am so very, very sorry. I just received an email from Mary Lou at OLR and I'm in shock. I have no words to tell you how very sorry I am. Please know that Chetan and each of you will be in my prayers. May God bless you, watch over you and bring you His healing and peace.
With love and prayers,
Susan
Dear Elizabeth and Chetan's family,
I have prayed unceasingly since hearing of Chetan's death. I am so very sorry for your loss. My prayer is that you are surrounded by Love and know that you are being held gently and lovingly in the palm of God's hand. Chetan is home. You, whom he loved so dearly, are all left to hold one another up and remember him, his life and the gifts he's left behind.
God Bless You All,
Mary Lou & Herb Bellingham
Susan and I send our deepest condolences. This is a terrible loss for his family, but also for the world. May his memory always be for a blessing. We will keep you in our thoughts and prayers. Kent and Susan Bailey
My thoughts and prayers are with Elizabeth and all the family. Chetan was a friend in college, and I enjoyed playing cards with him. He was a wonderful guy.
Our prayers are with the family during this difficult time. Please let us know if we can help in anyway.
Dear Jan and Ken,
A very sweet memory we have of Chetan was when he took Maria (then about 18 months old) on the trampoline at your house with him and his friends. He could have very easily ignored an 18 month old, especially with his friends visiting, but not Chetan. He protected her with his arms and smiled so brightly as they bounced up and down. Darrell remembers playing 500 with Chetan mostly because Chetan was so good at taking "tricks". We remember Chetan to be a young man of integrity and most of all a young man who was very kind. We were struck with shock and so much sadness when we heard of the loss of your vibrant son. We are just so deeply sorry.
Love,
Darrell and Georgene
Chewy was an amazing person. I played soccer with him in Rochester for several years and he always was such a sincere and caring person. He also had such an amazing passion for his research and I truly enjoyed talking science with him. I am deeply saddened by his passing and I know he will be greatly missed by many people. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and Liz.
My condolences to the Offord family. Chetan was a great friend to have as kids in school, on the soccer field and at the poker table. He will be sorely missed!
R.I.P. "Chewy"
It is with the deepest condolences that I write this message to the Offord family. Chetan was an amazing guy with the ability to make everyone laugh and bring smiles wherever he was. We haven't seen him in Canada now for a few years but doesn't make the memories any less memorable.
Thinking of you all through this difficult time, sending prayers, love and hugs to you all.

I'm in deep shock and very sadden by your loss. I met Lizzy a couple of years ago and she always had a huge smile on her face when she spoke of Chetan. My deepest sympathy goes out to her and the family.

Was saddened and shocked at his loss so young. He had so much yet to do. He was such a friendly and kind person. Sincere sympathy
I knew Chetan from High School Band. I am sorry to hear of his passing. Gone to soon. RIP
