Cheryl Jo Van Tries
Cheryl Jo Van Tries, 75, of Rochester, MN, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 11, 2025 at The Mayo Clinic, St. Marys Hospital.
Born on November 30, 1949, in Rochester, MN, Cheryl was the beloved daughter of Donald and Marion (Olson) Rogers. A proud graduate of Mayo High School, Cheryl dedicated an incredible 47 years of service to Mayo Clinic – beginning in food service and finally working as a Central Service Technician at Saint Marys Hospital. Her work ethic, loyalty, and care touched the lives of many throughout her long career.
Cheryl had a passion for the simple joys in life: reading a good book, playing cards with friends, and spending weekends camping in her beloved mobile “cabin” — especially taking trips up north. She loved being out in the sun, hunting for hidden treasures at flea markets, and her beloved cats. Cheryl was also an amazing cook and an even better baker, known for her Christmas goodies and her cherished “Cookie Day” tradition with her dear friend, Mary.
Strong-willed yet easygoing, Cheryl was known for her practicality, and budgeting smarts. On March 12, 1982, Cheryl was united in marriage to Scott Van Tries, in Rochester, MN. Together they built a life full of meaningful memories.
She is survived by her loving husband, Scott; her daughter, Jennifer (Demian) Smith; her son, Christopher Van Tries; and her grandsons, Gannon and Ethan. She is also survived by her sister, Donna (Jerome) Bacon; brother, Gary Rogers; two nephews; and a wide circle of extended family and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Donald and Marion.
A funeral service will be held 12:00 PM Monday, September 15, 2025 at the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home, 1105 12th St. SE, Rochester. Condolences
The family of Cheryl Jo Van Tries has received the following condolences.
Dear Scott, Jennifer and Christopher
I met Cheryl in band in 1966 as we started the new school year at the brand new Mayo High School. We both played the Clarinet, she was a senior and I was a sophomore. We must have sat next to each other as we became friends, we had fun riding the school bus to out of town games for Football and enjoyed playing at basketball games. We would get passes to practice playing our clarinets instead of study hall but we seemed to get more talking done than practicing.
A few years passed and then in 1981 my then boyfriend Bob decided to set it up so Scott, his then renter, and Cheryl would meet and the rest is history. I was blessed to have Cheryl in my life and I will cherish the many telephone calls that we have had throughout the years and our lunch dates with Cheryl, my sister Linda and me.
May Cheryl rest in peace and her memory be a blessing.
Scott and Christopher,
We are so very sorry for your loss! We didn't know Cheryl very well but knew how much she meant to you both. Hugs to you both💗
