Charles T. “Chuck” Barry

The funeral for Charles T. “Chuck” Barry will be 11:00AM Thursday, March 17, 2011 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Rochester with Pastor Karna Hagen officiating.  Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens in Rochester with military rites provided by American Legion Post 92.  Visitation will be 5:00PM to 7:00PM Wednesday, March 16, 2011 in River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home and one hour prior to the services at the church on Thursday.

Chuck, 86 of Rochester died Friday, March 11, 2011 as a result of a battle with lung cancer.  Chuck was born June 19, 1924 in Eyota to Grace (Neal) and James S. Barry.  Chuck was the fifth of ten children.  He had five brothers and four sisters.  He attended school in Rochester.  At the age of seventeen, before graduating from high school, Chuck entered the Navy on January 2, 1942.  He would later receive his Rochester High School diploma on February 1, 2000 as an honored World War II veteran.  Chuck served in the Naval Armed Guard as a signalman until July 1947.  Chuck served on the USS Frederick Douglas that was torpedoed and sank in the North Atlantic in September 1943, one of 52 ships in a convoy of 65 ships sunk at that time.

Chuck married Kathleen Delores Kulsrud in 1947 at Union Prairie Church in Lanesboro, MN.  They lived most of their married life living in Rochester except for three years spent living in Portland Oregon.  Together they had three sons, Scott, Kim and Mark and one daughter, Vicki.  Chuck worked for Barry Plumbing and Heating, retiring in 1988.  From May 1988 until September 2009, Chuck provided “temporary” service to Family Services of Rochester, delivering Meals on Wheels.  Chuck enjoyed his time fishing and hunting and most especially being with family and friends.

Chuck was preceded in death by his sons Scott and Kim as well as five brothers and two sisters.  He is survived by his wife Kathleen “Kitty” of Rochester, son Mark (Beth) of Helena Montana, daughter Vicki of Rochester, grandson Kim Charles Barry, a junior at Concordia College in Moorhead and currently spending a semester attending NUI in Galway Ireland, granddaughter Sydney Rae Barry a freshman attending Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma Washington, sister Joan (Gillespie) of Owatonna and sister Lois (Laine) of Tucson Arizona.
