Charles “Chuck” Sheffield III

Charles “Chuck” Garrett Sheffield III, 77, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 19, 2022, at River Bend Assisted Living and Memory Care in Rochester, Minnesota after a two-year bout with lung cancer and dementia. Despite his ailments, he always maintained his signature smile and sense of humor. He also loved sharing stories about his life during frequent visits with family and friends.

Chuck was born in Oakland, California on July 22, 1944, to Dorothy (Acord) and Charles Garett Sheffield Jr. After living in various locations, the family made their home in West St. Paul, Minnesota, where Chuck attended Sibley High School. He served in the U.S. Navy, then worked as a chef on the Great Northern Empire Builder passenger train.

Chuck always had a passion for helping people. He graduated from the physical therapy program at St. Cloud State University, earning an undergraduate degree. He was accepted into the Mayo Clinic’s physical therapy program in Rochester, where he completed his education. Chuck worked as a physical therapist at Mayo for 39 years, retiring in 2012.

In 1970, Chuck married Jane (Krupp) Sheffield, and together they had three children; they later divorced. In 1995, he married Linda (Brovold) Sheffield and enjoyed many happy years together until her death in 2019.

Chuck was an avid fisherman for most of his life, visiting lakes and rivers throughout Minnesota. He also enjoyed pheasant, grouse, and deer hunting. When he wasn’t outdoors, he was known as an accomplished guitarist, playing with a variety of groups in the Rochester area.

Chuck was an active member at Mount Olive Lutheran Church, playing guitar and singing in the choir. He loved traveling the United States with his wife, Linda. He also cherished weekly coffee meetings with a circle of longtime friends and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Chuck is survived by his sons, Dave Sheffield (Stacee Drezek) of Pleasant Valley, Iowa, and Dan Sheffield (Melaina) of Fitchburg, Wisconsin; his daughter, Rebecca Sheffield of Rochester; and two grandchildren, Dave’s son Alex Sheffield and Rebecca’s daughter Lilly Burkhart. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Larry Sheffield, and his wife Linda.

Dave, Dan, and Rebecca extend their sincerest gratitude to the exceptional care teams at River Bend and Mayo Clinic Hospice for their kind, compassionate care. They also thank Chuck’s tremendous medical team at Mayo for their expertise and guidance.

The Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 26, 2022 at Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Rochester. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday, July 25, 2022 at the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at Mount Olive Lutheran Church on Tuesday, July 26, 2022. The burial service is at 2:00 p.m. at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Preston.

Condolences

The family of Charles “Chuck” Sheffield III has received the following condolences.

Dear Family,

What a very fine and handsome photo of Chuck, just like it was yesterday that I last saw him.  Full of kindness & care, laughter & a great smile, and always willing to lend a hand to others.  Ask him anything and he would personally help you track it down.  He Walked the Talk indeed.  I have thought of Chuck often since our move Up North, actually just earlier today he came to mind in a story shared with a colleague, and then I came upon this notice this evening.  Our sincere condolences to all the family.  I have missed Chuck since his retirement from our Mayo PT team.  I remember some of his stories of the Chef on the train!  And something about a bicycle on his way to work I think!  And it seems that I have heard him with his guitar, or at least imagined that I have.  You know, he would often hum and sing a little chorus of something during our conversations.  So super great.  He was a good daily reminder of the all the things that are really important in life.

Of course, and so absolutely true: until we meet again Dear Friend!  Tracy and Family

Church was a very special friend. We hunted and fished together for many years. This friendship made him comfortable to share many things with me that trouble him. I spent many hours listening when he reached out. This further deepened the bond between us. I shall miss him and I’m sure he will enter my thoughts many times in the future. My condolences to you three children and blessings to Becky’s little ones. Chuck loved them very much. God’s peace to you all.
Kindly, David Johnston a good old friend of Your dad.

My deepest sympathy to all the family.   I worked with Chuck for 30 years at St Mary’s in PT.  He was a role model and mentor to so many of us.  He always found time to provide a wise word of advice when anyone faced a challenging situation.  Most of all, patients loved Chuck for his calm confident demeanor and caring compassionate manner.  May he Rest In Peace.

Dave and family, I am so sorry for your loss of your father. I am Jacqueline Porter's mother, Jerry
