Betty M. Pyfferoen

Obituary for Betty M. Pyfferoen

Mrs. Pyfferoen, age 93, passed away at Madonna Summit in Byron, MN on September 29, 2020. She had been a resident at Madonna Living Community since May of 2015. She was born on June 12, 1927, to John and Mary (Jensen) Peters in Rochester, MN. She graduated from Rochester High School and was employed as a telephone operator before her marriage to Glynn Pyfferoen on October 1, 1946. They farmed and did custom work in the communities of Plainview, Kasson, and rural Rochester. During marriage, Betty and Glynn raised 11 children.

Their home was often a refuge for teens and kids’ friends who were out of their own homes or just needed to get away. She was known as the “Egg Lady” since she sold dozens of eggs daily and enjoyed cajoling with her egg customers. She was also very active in her local church helping with the funeral dinners and frequently baked bread and other goods for friends and neighbors who had experienced loss. She would frequently drive friends/ family to appointments if they were unable to transport themselves.

She took time out of her busy days to visit the sick and home bound with a servant’s heart. 1 John 4:18 “There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear.” She loved gardening, canning, raising chickens, baking, and her dogs. Her finger rolls were famous to family and friends! One of her favorite pastimes was playing cards. She loved the social aspect of getting together to play cards but she was also very competitive and played to win! She and Glynn enjoyed hosting an annual 4th of July family reunion and neighborhood picnic. Betty and Glynn celebrated 50 years of marriage in 1996.

Following the death of her husband in 1997, Betty enjoyed the companionship of a special friend, Kenny Benedict until his passing in 2013.

Survivors include 9 children, daughter-in-law Connie (Michael) Pyfferoen of Rochester, MN,  Patricia (Mark) Mehrhoff of Cleveland, TN, Thomas (Denise) Pyfferoen of Pine Island, MN, Mary (Paul) Sutton of Dodge Center, MN, Ann Pyfferoen (Jim Melville) of Mantorville, MN,  Peter (Carol) Pyfferoen of Oronoco, MN, Paul (Carmen) of Byron, MN, Christine (Brad) Gibson of Charles City, IA, Ruth (Mike) Johnson of Kasson, MN, and Todd (Shelly) Pyfferoen of Byron, MN; 27 grandchildren, 53 great grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband Glynn; sons Michael and Daniel; sons-in-law Allan Polikowsky and Dave Walters, and special friend, Kenny.

Mrs. Pyfferoen was the last surviving member of the Peters family which included brothers: William, Christy, John, George, and Frank Peters; sisters: Anne Johnson, Esther Peters, Margaret Peterson, Freida Curtis, Mildred Christopherson, and Gladys Larson.

A private family funeral Mass for Betty M. Pyfferoen will be at St. Pius X Catholic Church in Rochester, MN on Saturday, October 3, 2020 at 11a.m. with the Rev. Thomas Loomis officiating. A public visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, October 2, 2020 at the church and one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Gardens.

We send our sympathies and prayers to the family of Betty.  We live in St. Mary’s Hills.  We bought eggs from Betty and my neighbor and I got together for coffee a few times with Betty..  I taught school in Byron and had some of the family in school. My neighbor Margaret and I were  also at Betty’s big 90 birthday party.  Betty was a special person always with a smile on her face.  She loved her family.

Dear Pyfferoen Family.  I am truly sorry for the loss of your dear mother.  She was a fun and spunky lady.  I remember when my mom passed (Betty Badger) your mom was the first person to come and offer her condolences and brought banana bread!  We shared lots of fun memories, which Dad truly appreciated.  When your mom and my dad were in Madonna Meadows at the same time, they did play cards together and your mom had to get on dad's case when he slipped up!!!!!  it was fun to watch!!!!  Again, my sincere sympathy to all of you, your mom was a peach!!! Sincerely, Bev (Badger) Delisle

Thinking of you all at this sad time. Sending hugs and prayers.

We came to Rochester to start residencies at Mayo and sometime after we came we bought our first home and it was near luckily for us near Glen and Betty.  They were wonderful neighbors.  Glen would bail us out of storms (in Missouri snow is rare) and Betty would give me ideas for baking bread and gardening.  Chris and Ruth would babysit for our children at first and then Ruth became a very important caregiver for our children and has continued to care for us as we age.  Ruth is a dear friend to us and every day we feel so fortunate to know her and to have known this wonderful family.

I am so sorry to hear about the death of Betty.  I always enjoyed my visits with Betty!  I got a big smile when I entered her room; she loved to pray and tell stories of days gone bye.  I send my prayers to all of her family whom she loved so much and ask that God bless you with peace and many loving memories.   Sister Sue Reif, OSF

Tom, Denise, and family,

Thoughts and prayers are with you all. What a grand lady was your mother, grand and great grandmother.  Leo and I always loved to visit with her whenever we saw her. I recall she was very welcoming when we came toByron and  got involved with church. Leo is quite ill now thus this computer message but I will surely tell him when he is better.  We will miss her as you will but know she is in the Lord’s hands.  Fondly, Mary

Aunt Betty was my favorite aunt.  She was a generous loving lady, with a great sense of humor.  I loved visiting her when I came to town.  Life was difficult at times for her,  but she continued to be a giving, helping hand when needed.  She always had time to visit the homebound and bring cheer where needed.  I will miss this lovely lady. ❤
