Bernice Mae (Saueressig) Zimmerman, age 87 of Rochester, died peacefully on Monday, August 31st , 2015, at her home in Rochester. She had just recently returned from a memorable family reunion with relatives at their Wisconsin cabin that has been in the family since 1959.
Born in Union Township (near Plum City), Wis., on May 5, 1928, to Ralph and Grace Saueressig, Bernice was one of 4 children. She attended the University of Wisconsin, River Falls and became a school teacher in Rice Lake, WI. There she met Lyle Phillip Zimmerman, they married in 1951 and then moved to Rochester, MN. He opened a gift and watch repair store (“The Buckskin Shoppe”) where Bernice assisted in what became the family business of 33 years (Oh,…while raising 5 children!).
Bernice loved her Catholic faith and lived it fully as a generous volunteer in Rochester, including 11 years working with the sisters at Assisi Heights, helping annually working with Christmas Anonymous, serving on the St. Francis School Board, as well as 40 years as an alto with the St. Francis Choir and as a volunteer with “The Community Clothesline.”
Bernice is survived by her sisters Irma (Wally) Lindholm and LaVerna (John) Meyer and five adult children: daughters Sheri (Casey) Taylor and Lori (Michael) Tollen, and sons Terry (Sandra), Dan (Sue), and David (Lisa). She leaves behind 10 grandchildren: Chelsi & Lisha \ Vas, Andrey & Karina \ Sara & Hanna \ Micah, Carly & John Paul, Janice Saueressig and Jean (Thomas) Hurlburt and many dear friends. Bernice was preceded in death by her brother Gordon, and husband Lyle.
The family has suggested that memorials go to Catholic Charities for the poor, the St. Francis Endowment Fund, or to a charity of your choice.

We enjoyed having Bernice and Lyle as friends. They are in our prayers.. Mary & Bill Perry
Dear Dan and family, We are sorry to hear of the death of your mother, Bernice. In recent years, she and your dad, Lyle, were important friends in my parents' circle. My parents, Bill and Mary Perry, really appreciated the time they spent together. After your dad was gone, my parents continued to see your mom for Mass at Assisi Heights. I am sure they shared much in common: being children of the Great Depression, family businesses in Rochester, affiliation with St. Francis, large families, and religion. We are sorry your parents are no longer with you to share their wisdom and love. Sincerely, Connie Perry & Mike Pesch
Hello Bernice's family,
I only knew Bernice for a couple years when we were pool mates at water aerobics. For the short time that I knew her, I so enjoyed her. She was such a friendly wonderful lady. Unfortunately, I will be out of town for Bernice's service but would like to give a memorial in her honor. If someone could email me the address I would appreciate it. My condolences, Barb
Dear Sheri, Lori, Terry, Dan, and David,
I was saddened to hear of the passing of your Mother, Bernice. Please accept my sincerest condolences. May her memories bring you comfort during this sad time.
Some of my fondest childhood memories were when the Saueressig "cousins" including your Mom and Dad used to visit us on the farm when I was growing up. We also certainly enjoyed the visits to Rochester as well. She was a wonderful person and I'm sure she will be missed in every way.

We are so sorry for your loss. It seems so hard to take all this in, and understand it completely. Some sadness will linger, but you will have many happy memories to cherish.
Aunt Bernice was one of my favorite aunts, I will always remember how she treated us "kids" at the cottage in our youth.
Try to be strong as a family, I'm sure that's what your mother would wish.
All our love, Paul, Irene and Ethan Zimmerman
Our thoughts and prayers are with your family at this time. We were so blessed to visit with Aunt Bernice at the cabin family reunion.
