Bernard R. Tlougan

Bernard “Bernie” Tlougan, age 97, a retired carpenter, died Saturday at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Msgr. Thomas Cook and Father Timothy T. Reker at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church on Friday, November 4, 2016 at 10:00AM with interment at Grandview Memorial Gardens and Military Honors provided by American Legion Post 92 of Rochester.

Bernard Raymond Tlougan, the second oldest of sixteen children, was born July 4, 1919, in Quincy Township, Olmsted County to Alfred and Florence (Kramer) Tlougan. He was educated in rural schools and worked in farming until entering the U.S. Army where he served as a surgical tech in the European Theater during World War II. Mr. Tlougan was united in marriage to Harriet Lois Sackett at the St. Francis Catholic Church rectory on September 20, 1942. A carpenter and cabinetmaker, he was a member of the Carpenters and Joiners Union Local 1382 and served on the Apprenticeship board at the local vocational technical school for many years. He had been active as a leader in the Boy Scouts of America and was recognized with many awards. Bernard was a charter member of St. Francis Catholic Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion Post 92, volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, and enjoyed helping at the American Red Cross. He enjoyed hunting with his family, gardening, and was an avid fan of the Minnesota Twins.

Mr. Tlougan was preceded in death by his wife Harriet, his parents, one sister and eleven brothers. He is survived by three sisters; Jeanette Flanders, Ione Leitzen, and Marcella (Larry) Swensen, all of Rochester, seven children; James (Jane) Tlougan, Brian (Peg) Tlougan, Roger (Diane) Tlougan, Andy (Debbie) Tlougan, all of Rochester, Leslie (Karen) Tlougan of Waseca, Allan (Marcia) Tlougan of Prior Lake, and Cecilia (Ed) Gaul of Faribault; seventeen grandchildren, and nineteen great-grandchildren with three more on the way.

Family and friends may call at the Macken Funeral Home’s River Park Chapel from 4:00-7:00PM on Thursday, November 3rd 2016 and at St. Francis Church one hour before the service on Friday, November 4, 2016. The family prefers memorials to St. Francis Catholic Church, Boy Scouts of America, or the American Red Cross.

Condolences

The family of Bernard R. Tlougan has received the following condolences.

I have lots of fantastic memories from Scouting; twisting rope, sharpening knives, starting campfires, lashing together a catapult in Apache Mall, camping at Gamehaven.  Even beyond these hard skills are the soft skills, embodied in the Scout Law, that were well taught to generations of young men under Bernie's leadership.  I am thankful for the time and energy he invested in us.

Michael McMaster
Troop 83, Eagle Scout, Class of 1992

Bernie was always so patient and eager to teach us scouts. I will always remember him as being joyful, gentle, and thoughtful. He was the perfect embodiment of the Scout Laws.

Steve McMaster

Eagle Scout Class of 1989

Bernie always had a smile and a great story. I will miss seeing him-he was always able to brighten my day:)

You are all in my thoughts.

Love, Annie Skogen (Olivia & Jack)

To all the Tlougan Family,

We will sure miss Bernie!  The daily visits. He won’t need the motorized scooter he kept inquiring on as I am sure he is dancing to some Polka music and enjoying some root beer. He was very proud of all of his kids, loved to talk about stories of his younger days, to Boy Scouts, military days, to fixing things. He sure loved his shop that he had in the basement of his house. Where there was action, he wanted to be in the middle of it. When we had our fall festival this past September for staff, Bernie was brought outside to enjoy watching the kids play and visit with staff. He had a smile on his face from ear to ear and didn’t want to leave. Sending hugs and prayers to you  all.

Dear Tlougan family,

My siblings and I had met your sweet father when visiting our mother at Madonna. He was so attentive and always had a story for us. We were especially touched when he fondly spoke of our father.

Our condolences,

Elissa Wente Zeman/Wente family

To the Tlougan Family--I saw Bernie often at Madonna Towers while visiting family, he always enjoyed talking and telling stories.  He ate at the same table as my grandfather Ken Noser who also just passed away.  With Sympathy, Josh Noser

To the Tlougan family with our love and condolences.

I will always remember uncle Bernie as a kind and gentle man. I will always remember growing up with the Tlougan family and the times we used to get together. I know Bernie is now united with the Lord and Harriet. I wish we could be there but our thoughts are with the family.

Love from Bob and Helen Senrick in Colorado.

Our hearts go out to you as you mourn the loss of your father.  We know all too well the hole that is left with his passing.  May God give you some peace in the days ahead.

With deepest sympathy, Ellen & John

Dear Family of Bernie,

I liked Bernie a lot and he was such a good man. I remember when he was in Scouts at Jefferson School and I was in DAR with Helen. I am sorry for your loss.

Norma
