Arthur “Art” Donald Brandt

Arthur “Art” Donald Brandt passed away peacefully at home on August 19, 2020.

Art was born March 15, 1930 to Albert and Adeline (Wendt) Brandt in Rock Dell Township, MN.  He enlisted in the US Navy in 1951 and served aboard the LST 525 and the APA 224.  While home on leave, he met Millie Schroeder and they were married a year later in 1953. Art and Millie returned to Rochester in 1955 and raised 3 daughters and 2 sons.  Art worked for Alvin E. Benike Construction for 36 years.  He was a member of the American Legion Post 92, a Cub and Boy Scout Leader, and held a number of positions at his church.  Art was an avid fixer of most anything that needing fixing, and loved to tweak things to make them work better.  Both Art and Millie enjoyed traveling in their early retirement years and he was a devoted husband and caregiver to his wife as her health declined.  Over the past 10 years, Art developed a passion for gardening, cooking, and baking.  Art loved spending time with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He always had a bag of Tootsie Rolls stashed away to give to the little-ones.

Art is survived by his daughters, Laura Darst of Byron, Vickie (Ken) Leinen of Lismore, MN,  Judy Brandt of Raleigh, NC, sons Douglas (Leah) of Rochester and Gregory (Nancy) of Verona, WI, ten grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.  He is preceded in death by his wife, Millie, his parents, 3 brothers, 1 sister and two son-in-laws.

The Funeral Service for Art will be held on Monday, August 24, 2020 at 3:00PM in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home with Pastor Adam Koglin officiating. Current social-distancing guidelines will be followed. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service in the chapel. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens Cemetery of Rochester. Military honors will be provided by the Rochester American Legion Post 92.

Memorials are preferred to Redeemer Lutheran Church of Rochester.

Condolences

The family of Arthur “Art” Donald Brandt has received the following condolences.

When I was young, my uncle Art was a large gentle figure in my life. He was always willing to listen to a scrawny little kid when he spoke, as if I had something important to say. As an adult, I witnessed his strength and character, as how he took care of his ill wife in a loving way not too many would be willing to do.

To his Brothers, Sister and my Cousins and their families, you have lost a wonderful person, and Sandy and I grieve for you. With things as they are, we chose not to attend Art's funeral so that there would be capacity for others, but you are all in our thoughts and prayers.

 - Ken and Sandy Brandt

There are so many wonderful memories of Uncle Art when I was growing up.  I will miss him.  Thinking of you all.  My heart is with you.

I always enjoyed visiting with Art, before I retired, and then a couple of times after, when I was helping out.  I remember how faithful he was caring for Millie, first at home and then when she was in the nursing home.

Knowing his strong faith, I can rejoice that he has now claimed the crown of life laid up for him in heaven.

So saddened to hear of your father's passing, Greg.  My heart goes out to you as well as your extended family.  The Lord

s comfort and peace be with you all!

We are so very sorry for your loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

Dear Doug and Family:

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your Dad. My prayers and thoughts are with you at this difficult time. I hope you can reflect on all the happy times spent together, and  those memories will guide you to forward.

Sincerely,

Tony Rand

Our heartfelt sympathy and prayers are with the family of Uncle Art Brandt.  He was always tinkering with anything electronic (and anything broken).  You could always find him in his shop.
