Andrew B. Foy
Andrew Bryan Foy grew up in Barrington, Illinois, surrounded by a large family. He loved baseball from a young age, playing Knothole and Little League while dreaming of becoming the second baseman for the Cubs. Andy swam for Barrington High School and spent his summers teaching swimming lessons and lifeguarding. Music was vital to Andy: starting with classic rock, his tastes evolved into a deep appreciation of obscure Indie bands. His humor was quick and filled his people’s lives with laughter.
While pursuing an Honors Degree in English at Marquette University, Andy developed a passion for service. He proudly lived the Marquette mantra “Be the Difference,” serving as a leader in the Volunteer Corps. He went on to Georgetown University School of Medicine, where he was inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha and received the medical student neurosurgery prize. Andy then completed his neurosurgical training at Mayo Clinic, and was a Neurosurgery Research and Education Foundation fellow, followed by a pediatric neurosurgery fellowship at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago.
Since 2011, Andy was an attending at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, where he rose to the rank of Professor. Andy deeply valued his colleagues and staff at MCW. Andy adored his patients, often sharing stories and little details that made each child’s journey unique. While his clinical focus was neurooncology and spina bifida, Andy took pride in mastering much of neurosurgery. He pioneered fetal meningocele repair in Wisconsin and championed lifespan care, finding great joy in watching his patients grow up. He was an advocate for ending healthcare disparities and improving the lives of patients, proudly working with Spina Bifida Wisconsin and the Global Alliance for the Prevention of Spina Bifida-Folate.
Andy brought immense joy to his family. Whether sipping coffee while talking by Lake Michigan or watching a band at a summer festival, he shared a rich friendship with his wife, Michelle. He loved teaching Annika about baseball and offering thoughtful advice as she prepared for university and beyond. Together, the three travelled the world, discovering great food, enjoying the arts, and hiking in the wild (but always sleeping indoors). An advocate of native prairies, Andy began by rewilding his own backyard, then turned his attention to Michelle’s. He enthusiastically recruited Annika to harvest seeds each fall, nurtured them in the basement, and the family planted them in spring.
Andy is predeceased by his grandmother, Mary Hondo, and his great-uncle, Leonard Capulli, both of whom he admired deeply for their kindness and warmth (as well as his other grandparents, Berney Hondo and June and George Foy). He is survived by many beloved family members including his parents Mary and Larry Foy, who provided many opportunities, and his sister Heather Foy, whose thoughtful nature he appreciated. His cousin Brooke Rogers was a lifelong companion in laughter, and his cousin Kimmy Broders was a loving and warm supporter.
Andy passed away peacefully at home. He was appreciative of his care at the Medical College of Wisconsin and the Mayo Clinic.
A memorial will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, January 10, 2026, at The River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home in Rochester, Minnesota. Condolences
The family of Andrew B. Foy has received the following condolences.
I worked alongside him in many patient care cases over the years as a child life specialist with the amazing, talented, kind and gentle Dr. Andrew Foy, at Children’s WI, wow, he will be missed by so many. Holding his wife and daughter and his family and friends, coworkers, patients and their families, he cared for so many! Holding them in comfort and peace, love and healing. ❤️🩹
We are all so sad to hear about Dr Foy's passing. It was such a scary time for us when our son saw Dr Foy and I remember how his kind, calm and gentle demeanor made us less anxious. He made a very scary time not so scary -- especially for our then 5th grader. He was an amazing and brilliant surgeon -- our son was back home in two days and healed very nicely. He is now a sophomore at the University of Minnesota and is thriving because of Dr Foy. Our deepest condolences to Dr Foy's family. We will keep you in our prayers.
Reading his well written, beautiful obituary solidifies what we already know -- that Dr Foy was an amazing, smart, kind, gentle soul who has left us too soon.
Deepest Sympathies,
The Dobbertin Family
I’m very saddened to read this. He was my son Jordan’s first neurosurgeon we worked with at birth. Dr Foy performed the first of Jordan’s brain surgeries at the age of 2 and many follow ups. I remember the nurses all swooned over his stitch work because it was so well done, and how he explained to me how unique my sons brain anatomy was laid out, which was intriguing to Dr Foy. He was a very soft spoken, smart, and kind person. It has been years since we’ve seen him but I’ll never forget his kindness.
We are deeply sorry for your profound loss. Dr.Foy was a true difference maker in our daughter’s life and ours. He was a true gentleman and the kindest man. We will truly miss him. Please know our family is praying for you. We are forever grateful for Dr. Foy and the difference he has made for our daughter’s life.
I was heartbroken to hear of Andy’s passing. Nothing about this is easy, it just hurts, but know that my condolences and sympathies are with Michelle, Annika, the entire Foy family, and all of Andy’s friends. You all will be in my thoughts and prayers during this challenging time and please let me know I am always here if there is anything I can do.
That is one of the most beautiful obituaries I have ever read. There is not much I can add, other than to say I enjoyed every minute spent with Andy and I truly appreciated how much he loved life, his family, his patients, and the Cubs. He will be forever missed, but never forgotten, and I know heaven is now a better place as he is welcomed by all those who love him so dearly.
All my love,
Matt
