Ambrose Xavier King

Ambrose Xavier King was a man who deeply loved God, his church, his wife and family, his country, and his community.

The son of Herman and Irene (LeTendre) King, Ambrose was born on August 3, 1925.  He grew up near Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin and in 1943, soon after graduating from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. Ambrose served on a destroyer in the Pacific and was honorably discharged in June 1946.

Ambrose married Marjorie Bushland on May 5, 1947. They were married for 61 years and were blessed with seven children, 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Professionally, Ambrose worked as a manager for Hobbs Supply Company in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, for ten years. He and Marge moved their family to Rochester in 1957, where he worked for United Electric Wholesale Company serving as a salesman and branch manager until his retirement in 1985.

In 1947, Ambrose was initiated into the Third Degree of the Knights of Columbus and in 1966, he was exemplified into the Fourth Degree of the Order. Ambrose was very active, holding all the chairs of both the Third and Fourth Degrees. He served as District Deputy for eight years and also served in various state council offices. He was elected to the Minnesota State Assembly Hall of Fame in 1987.

Ambrose also served his community. He was a founding member of the Breakfast on the Farm committee. For three years, he served on the Rochester Recreational Board. He was a volunteer basketball coach at the Youth Vocational Center in Rochester and was a registered Minnesota State High School League official for football, basketball, and baseball.

After his retirement, Ambrose worked three years as the parish administrator for St. Francis of Assisi Church. He and Marge then moved to Little Rock, Arkansas where he served as administrator at Our Lady of Souls Catholic Church for four years. They returned to Rochester and he continued to serve on various councils and committees at St. Pius X Catholic Church.  Ambrose always had time to serve as a Eucharistic Minister to the homebound and those in nursing homes.

Ambrose is survived by his daughters, Audrey Walter of Columbus, Wisconsin, Cathy Wagner of Rochester, Cammy (Michael) Kelley of Rochester, Candy (Harvey) Bergh of Byron, Connie King of Orinda, California, Carmen (Tom) Kane of Rochester; and his son, Chris (Rebecca) King of Tulsa, Oklahoma. He is also survived by his sister, Phyllis Yeager of Rochester.   Ambrose was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brother, two sisters, two sons-in-law, and a grandson.

A Celebration of Life Mass will be offered for Ambrose at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 30th at St. Pius X Catholic Church with Rev. Russell Scepaniak officiating. Visitation will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August 29th at St. Pius X Catholic Church. The Knights of Columbus Rosary will be said at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will also be held at the church one hour before the funeral mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Rochester with military rites provided by Rochester VFW Post 1215.

Condolences

The family of Ambrose Xavier King has received the following condolences.

My sincere sympathies to the family. Mr. King was always such a good, kind man. I have many fond memories of him , especially at St. Francis Church whenever he would serve in some capacity. It was truly an honor to know such a faithful man. And his children are a testament to that. God bless his memory.

so  wry sorry for your loss. He was a great example and a man of great faith.

My heartfelt condolences to all of the King family members.  Mr. King was one of the kindest men I have ever met, and I know he was dearly loved by all of you.  I am praying for all of you and hope that now that he in heaven, you will all have the ongoing sense of another angel watching over you.  You couldn't have a better angel on your side.

Hi Candy and siblings - May your Dad rest in peace.  I was glad I was able to sit with Candy at Mass about 10 days ago and we caught up about your Dad at that point.   May we all be as "stubborn"  and strong as him when it comes to our time.  It is most unfortunate, but I will not be able to attend the wake and funeral.  I need to help my niece with her baby who was born Aug. 19.  My niece is ill with an infection so she needs some help with her new little boy.  However, I wanted you to know that I am thinking about you and praying for you and your whole family.   May God give you peace!  Barb Virnig

Ambrose always said hello to us and took a genuine interest in the things going on in our community. He inspired us with his youthful energy and positive attitude. He went for walks regularly and when we offered him help of any kind he said he liked to do things himself to stay active. That made an impression on us. We are happy to have known him, and to have had such a good neighbor. We will miss his advice, his warm greetings and conversations while he sat out on the deck. We will miss him. Our deepest sympathy goes out his family and those who knew him. We are Jehovah’s Witnesses and we have faith that we will see him again in the future (John 5:28, 29). So until we get to say hello again, we pray for his family, that Jehovah God will give you all comfort and strength during this difficult time of loss (2 Corinthians 1:3, 4).

King Family,

I am so sorry for your loss. From what I understand, Mr. Ambrose King made a profound impact on those around him. One way I know this is through the example of his son, Chris. Mr. Chris King is on my staff at Hale Jr. High. He is one of the most dedicated, compassionate, hardest working men I have ever met. I have to imagine that many of these qualities were instilled by his father. Chris has shared many wonderful stories about his father.

Chris, we miss you at Hale Jr. High. We look forward to your return. May God bless and keep you and your family during this time of transition.

I’m so sorry for your loss. I hope you find comfort in Jesus words at John 5:28,29. There Jesus promised a resurrection of our loved ones, saying that the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out. These resurrected ones will inherit the earth, as Jesus spoke about in Matthew chapter 5. Then, under the rule of God’s Kingdom, they will enjoy life the way God originally intended, in perfect health with no sorrow, pain or death. (Psalms 37:29. Isaiah 33:24. Revelation 21:4). What a wonderful time that will be! If you would like to learn more about this hope, please visit jw.org. Please accept my condolences.

King family.........I am so very sorry to here about your dad....it is so very hard no matter the circumstance or the age...we were both very blessed to have wonderful parents and grow up in a wonderful neighborhood. Please know that I am thinking of you. Our dad passed away 4 years ago and we miss him every single day...Hugs to all of you.

My heart goes out to the King family.  I know how much you looked up to your dad.  I've been thinking about you since I heard a couple weeks ago that he was struggling.  He's in a better place but I know it's such a sad time.  We're here for you Cam.

Today Ambrose is up in heaven doing what he did so often on earth....he is praying hard for all of us, especially his family! Having been re-united with Marjorie as soon as his soul reached heaven, it gives me great comfort that Ambrose is providing the same happy presence with her and others who are there as he always did with us here!

We will all miss Ambrose King, but having given his family and his Church so much service, he told everyone after reaching the age of 94  he was ready for the ‘next step ‘

Sorry Ambrose the Twins lost again! Maybe next year, you can do something about that!

Luv ya man! Pray for us.

john and I wish to extend our deepest sympathy to your whole family.  Ambrose was an amazing man who left his mark in many areas of our lives through service to our community, family,  church,  and country.  Hugs and prayers !
