Alan James Gessner

The funeral mass for Alan Gessner will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, January 14, 2012 at St. Pius X Catholic Church, with the Rev. Paul E. Nelson officiating.  Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Rochester.  Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 13, 2012 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church.

Mr. Gessner, 82, of Rochester, Minn., passed away Wednesday, January 11, 2012 at Maple Manor Health Care.

Alan was born February 17, 1929 in Theilman, Minnesota to Julius and Loretta (Harlan) Gessner.  He served in the United States Army during the Korea War.  Alan married Bernadine “Bea” Mathias on June 9, 1951 at St. Felix Catholic Church in Wabasha, Minnesota.  He worked on the loading dock at the milk plant at Marigold Dairy for 38 years, retiring in 1991.

Alan enjoyed watching westerns on television, especially Bonanza.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Bernadine “Bea” Gessner of Rochester; son, Richard Gessner of Rochester, daughter, Margaret (Jim) Miller of Wabasha, three grandchildren, one sister, Helen McGrath of Hastings, Minnesota.  Alan is preceded in death by his parents, one brother, four sisters and two grandchildren.

I have fond memories of the two of you while working at Maple Manor the first time that Al was there and than later seeing you both active in community events. I am sorry to read of your loss and hoping that you are being supported in this time of need. What a wonderful milestone to have reached 60 years of marriage!
