Mr. Vick, age 83 of Rochester, passed away on Thursday morning, December 13, 2012.
He was born July 3, 1929 in Banks, North Dakota, to George Arthur and Anne Sundfor Vick. After graduating from Watford City (ND) High School, he attended North Dakota State University, where he earned a BS in Industrial Engineering in 1951 and was initiated into the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society and Pi Tau Sigma National Honorary Mechanical Engineering Fraternity. He was then commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Air Force and entered flight training in Florida.
On February 21, 1952, Alan married Patricia Ann Korum, formerly of Fargo, North Dakota, in Lubbock, Texas.
Alan served in the Air Force until 1955. He flew 21 missions over North Korea as a B-29 pilot, then transitioned to KC-97s after the Korean War. His assignments included postings in Texas, Kansas, and Japan.
From 1955 to 1958, the couple lived in Phoenix and Scottsdale, Arizona where Alan was an engineer with Motorola. They then moved to Fargo, where he earned a MS in Engineering Science from North Dakota State University. He was appointed a faculty member in the Engineering Department at the school.
In 1962, Alan and Pat moved to Rochester. He was employed with IBM, first as an engineer and then in computer programming. The couple moved to Boulder, Colorado in 1965 and returned to Rochester in 1974. Alan retired from IBM in 1990. They again moved to Boulder and he taught computer science at Metropolitan College in Denver until 1992, when they returned to Rochester.
Alan was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Rochester, where he sang tenor in the choir for several years. He was a life member of the Elks, the American Legion, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He enjoyed bowling and golfing. From 2002 until 2011, Alan and Pat spent their summers in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia of Rochester, and two sons: Gregory Alan Vick of Arlington, Virginia; and Dr. Dan (Anne Marie) Vick of Manlius, New York; as well as two granddaughters, Juliette Anne Vick and Charlotte Elizabeth Vick of Manlius. Condolences
The family of Alan George Vick has received the following condolences.
My deepest condolances to the family of Al Vick. I worked with Al for several years in the late 70's before taking a transfer to Austin, TX. We had several fun pheasant hunting trips together. Al always had time to listen and help with any problems that you had and he was always happy and cheerful. Iam sure that there will be a void in the hearts and home of his family but Iam also sure that he has created memories that will carry on forever. Best wisihes - Al Fisher
I was sorry that I did not have an opportunity to visit with Alan again before he passed away. Alan & I completed Rotc at the same time. Then we lived in the same housing at Bartow, Fl. I remember like it was today the day he soloed in the T-6. He came into the barracks & I could tell he had been wet so I knew he had soloed. I did not complete my flight traning because of my eyesight. I was stationed at Barksdale AFB first & then served a tour of duty in Korea at several air bases. This would have been around the same time Alan was flying B-29s. I considered Alan to be a good friend. Blessed be the memory of Alan. DeWayne
Our deepest sympathy, Dan and Greg. Your father was quite an accomplished man. You have much of which to be proud. He served our country well, risking his life for the betterment of us all. He shared his knowledge of engineering and computer science to help advance the technological world which we all live in and enjoy. I didn't have the opportunity to really get to know him but I do know that he meant alot to Mike. Mike always looked up to your dad. For that, I am grateful. We can never have enough solid role models in our life.
You and your mom are in our prayers.
"... those who believe in me, though they should die, will come to life; and those who live and believe in me will never die." John 11:25a-26

Pat, Dana and Greg, We were so sorry to hear about Alan. It seems like Pat and Al were family after knowing you all these years. It was so nice to see Patty and Al in Nevis those summers when Kevin and Kim would come up. The last year that dad, Al and Leo Wanzek were there with Janet, mom and Patty, it was quite a party and is one of my fondest memories.
I would like to express my deepest condolences to Pat Vick on the death of her beloved husband and to Dan and Greg Vick on the death of their dear father, Alan. Mr. Vick was a good and gentle man, whose quiet and steadfast presence will be greatly missed by those who knew him. May all the members of his family find continued consolation in their memories of him both at this difficult time and in the years to come.
