Abel Thomas Subia

Abel Thomas Subia, 70, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 21, 2022. Abe’s spirit is carried on by his beloved sister, brother-in-law, nieces, grand-nieces and nephews, and family and friends from every walk of life.

Abe never met an acquaintance who didn’t become an instant friend. He was always ready with a bright smile and an easy laugh. Potentially the most devout Minnesota sports fan anyone had ever met, he wore a Twins or Vikings shirt every day of the year and will surely be cheering on both teams from heaven.

Abel was born March 25, 1951, in Wells, Minnesota, to Raul and Mary. After Raul’s passing during Abel’s infancy, he was raised by his mother, Mary and stepfather, Don Hassing. Abe graduated from Wells High School in 1970. He joined the Navy in 1971 and served in the Vietnam War. He returned home and moved to Rochester, Minnesota, where he attended vocational school studying culinary arts. He worked for many years as a chef at both the Ramada Inn and the Radisson Hotel.

He worked 16 years in the cafeteria and on the maintenance crew at St. Francis Elementary School and Church, where he was a favorite friend to staff and students alike. He could often be found in the halls proudly showing off photos of his sister and each of his nieces.

Abe was a lover of all things beautiful, bright, and over-the-top. An avid gardener, he filled his yard with countless flowerpots bursting with colorful flowers. In the winter, Christmas lights were his specialty. He was a music lover, specifically sixties music and especially Elvis Presley, the Beach Boys, and the Beatles. In the summer, Abe’s happy place was fishing in northern Minnesota and Wisconsin with his brother-in-law and sister. He also loved playing cards and watching movies. During his time at Arbor Terrace, he oversaw the flower garden and was a special friend to the staff and fellow residents.

Abe is survived by his sister, Audrey; brother-in-law, Denny; nieces, Kristin, Andrea, and Bethany; and six grandnieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary; father, Don; and father, Raul.

A celebration of Abe’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on February 25, 2022 at the Church of St. Francis of Assisi in Rochester, Minnesota. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.

In Abe’s memory, donations may be made to the Minnesota Department of Veteran’s Affairs or St. Francis Elementary School.

Condolences

The family of Abel Thomas Subia has received the following condolences.

Abel was a childhood friend from Easton. Many good memories of him and his sister Audrey.

We met Abe in Rochester through our friend Neil back in the rockin’ 80s. He was bigger than life and so much fun! What a great, welcoming, good, person! We have not seen him in many years now, but he has held a spot in our hearts that made us smile. We always looked his way when we passed his house hoping to note if he was home for a visit. He had a great smile that he was always willing to share. Rest well, Abe.
Fondly, Robin and Ellsworth Fields

Abe was my first cousin on my Dad’s side of the family.  I remember him as being such a fun loving kid and adult.  He was always so cute!!  And, a very handsome man.   He was always so kind to everyone.  We surely loved his cooking at some of the family gatherings!!  A real treat to be sure.  I was sad he struggled health-wise in recent years, but he seemed to take it all in stride.  He loved his sister, Audrey, and her family so much.  They helped him through it all.  They were blessed to have each other.  Abe had a very strong faith.  He loved taking care of the flowers and the yard where he lived.  I am so glad he and I had a chance to visit by phone and through Face Book during these last two, trying Covid years!!    I trust he is at peace now with other beloved family members and friends.  RIP, dear Abe!!    Love and peace to you, Audrey, Denny and family.

Rest In Peace Abe, we will miss you and your great smile and your friendship.

My deepest sympathy to Audrey and family. I was saddened to hear of Abe's passing. Abe was so full of life with incredible energy and enthusiasm. His brilliant smile and kindness would captivate everyone around him. Abe was incredibly loyal and a true friend. God be with you my friend.

Audrey and family,

My deepest condolences on hearing of the passing of Abel.  Growing up together in Easton Abel was one of my best friends, we were always playing or working together it seems.  Later when we got to be teenagers and I got my first car he was always riding shotgun with me.  I have many good memories of him and I together even though we lost touch with each other over the years he will always be remembered.  May God give you peace and comfort.

sincerely,

My deepest condolences on hearing of the passing of your brother Abel. Although we have somewhat fallen out of touch through the years as life goes on, I have very fond memories of both Abe and you. Abe always had time for us, on the occasions we would see him. I remember well his love for music. I am sure he is smiling upon us in heaven.

God has taken a good man home. He was always so much fun to visit with getting ready for the St. Francis annual rummage sale. We enjoyed talking gardening and flowers, among other things. Love, hugs & prayers to his family and freinds.

Abe was around us a lot through the years. As a customer, a fixture around our daughter's school, as a friend, and his abode on the route we would take almost daily! The seasonal changes at his house were always to look forward to! The stories of his Service to our Country, adventures, and life were always entertaining, maybe not epics, but because in the way he told them, were transporting. Long may you live Abe, here and now there......

Audrey, Abe meant so much to everyone at Arbor Terrrace.  From the first day he moved in till he took his last breath he was our friend, our hero and our plant caretaker.  I said that sometimes that special someone comes along and we don’t know how we will ever thank him for being so special.  Thank you for bringing him into our lives.  We love you and Abe!  God bless.

Audrey, your brother Abe was like a brother to me all through my teenage years. I loved spending nights with Abe in your basement, and all the times he spent at our farm. He was like family. He’s also a fellow navy veteran. His obituary was so accurate in how he was described. It’s been 50 years since I’ve last seen him, but I know it’d be like nothing’s changed if we ever met again. God Biess you Audrey, so sorry for all our loss.

I knew Abel as a young boy in Easton, he came out our farm many times. and played with all my brothers and sisters. He was a good guy and we still have great memories of him growing up. Rest In Peace Abel

Audrey, Did Abel have any other brothers or sisters besides you, I would very interested in knowing...

I was extremely saddened to hear of Abel's passing. We go back a long ways. We were classmates in the early years of grade school in Easton & remained friends forever. He always had a contagious smile & we called each other "My Cousin" to our friends. Abel, been a long time since I've seen you but never forgotten. Love you Cousin Rick  My condolences

Good heavens it’s been sooo very long since I last saw Abe - grade school, in fact.  He sure sounds like a good guy - Audrey, I’m so sorry for your loss.  Tricia
