Elaine Barth VanDeVoorde

The funeral Mass for Elaine Barth VanDeVoorde will be at 4:30PM on Thursday, October 29, 2009 at Resurrection Catholic Church in Rochester, MN with the Rev. Thomas Loomis officiating.  A private burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Rochester, MN.

Mrs. VanDeVoorde, 47, died unexpectedly Monday, October 26, 2009.

She was born Elaine Marie Barth on November 2, 1961 in Buffalo, New York to Dr. Eric and Phyllis (Byrnes) Barth. On June 3, 1989, she married Bob VanDeVoorde in Fargo, North Dakota.  Mr. VanDeVoorde is a project manager at IBM Rochester.

Elaine was a graduate of the University of Notre Dame in 1984 and received her medical degree from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks in 1988.  She completed her residency in psychiatry at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN and worked as a psychiatrist and medical director at Zumbro Valley Mental Health Center for many years.  Elaine’s love for children and passion for teaching young people led her to leave the medical profession to pursue and obtain her teaching degree.  Following her true calling, Elaine worked with students at St. Francis Catholic School in Rochester, MN for a number of years.  She also served her community as a cantor at Resurrection Catholic Church for twenty years.  Throughout her distinguished career helping others, Elaine will be most remembered as a loving wife and mother.

She is survived by her husband, Bob; 3 children, Kathleen, age 17, Megan, age 16 and Michael, age 14, all at home; parents, Dr. Eric and Phyllis Barth of Park Rapids, MN; 5 siblings, Lisa (Dan) Polachek of St. Paul, MN, Eric Barth of Anoka, MN, Robert Barth of Kansas City, MO, William (Nicole) Barth of St. Paul, MN and Colleen (Kevin) Vanderkolk of Pewauke, WI and 16 nieces and nephews.

Friends may call Wednesday, October 28 from 4:00PM – 8:00PM at Resurrection Catholic Church and one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church.  In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to St. Francis Catholic School or the Rochester Catholic School System.
