Dale G. Chrysler
Dale Chrysler passed away peacefully Wednesday November 20, 2013 with his family by his side. He passed away after a long Minnesota goodbye due to Alzheimer’s disease. Dale grew up in Hartley, Iowa. He attended Chico State (CA) college before joining the Army. He attended Officer Candidate School at Fort Belvoir VA and while there he met Rochester native Marian (Van Beers) and they were married at St. Johns, August 7, 1954. He was stationed at the Army War College in Pennsylvania where he was trained as a cryptographer. He was then posted to Frankfurt Germany where their first son was born.
After finishing college at Winona State, he taught history for a short time and then joined the Social Security Administration as a Field Representative. He was at the vanguard of data processing while working for the Social Security Administration in the early 1960’s. When the Mayo Clinic began using computers in 1965, Dale was hired as the first computer programmer there. He retired 25 years later having served in a variety of senior administrative staff positions.
He was the first elected Rochester Catholic School Board member from St. Johns parish. He fought hard for all parochial school students to ride the school bus for free. His lovely baritone voice added to the Rochester Male Chorus and the St. John’s Church choir. He was a member of the Ham Radio Club and had radio contacts from around the world.
He was fortunate to have many good years in retirement before he became ill. Trips abroad and winters in Texas were his favorite. He was active in the Mayo Clinic volunteer program greeting visitors at the information desk and in the history center. He was the quintessential putterer in the garden and garage. He also played in the golf league at Willow Creek for many seasons. His woodworking projects adorn the homes, yards, and toy boxes of friends and family.
He will be sorely missed by his wife of 59 years, Marian, and his six children Steve, Alan, Dan, Tim, Kathy and Susan – all graduates of Lourdes High School – their spouses, 14 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren. He shared his love of good music, good puns, and good tomatoes with them all. He appreciated the many years his wife devoted to his care during his illness.
A special thanks to Dr. A. Greenlund and the St. Mary’s 3-Domatilla staff as well as Seasons Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Mayo Clinic for Alzheimer’s research or the Lourdes Foundation.
Visitation will be Sunday Nov 24th 3:00 – 6:00 PM in River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, officiated by Msgr. Gerald Mahon on Monday 25th at 10:00 AM. Friends may also call one hour prior to the service at the church.
Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery Rochester.

Deepest Sympathy to all the ffamily, especially to Marian.
My condolences to Marian and all the Dales daughters and sons and their families.
I remembered Mr. Chrysler back in the mid 60's. I had a friend who's dad worked at the Chrysler dealership, but better yet, I had a friend who's dad was a Chrysler. I always thought that was neat.
When I moved to St. Johns Grade school I became friends with Steve Chrysler. That's when I first met Mr. Chrysler. Kids at our age didn't pay too much attention to parents. But I do remember Mr. Chrysler working on projects around the house. Steve would say that he couldn't do something because his dad needed his help on a project.
I also remember seeing Mr. Chrysler walking by St. Johns School going home to lunch. I thought that was nice that you could walk home to lunch.
Dale was always so friendly and interested in what was happening when ever I would see him at an event. There are people in life that you like to see and Dale was one of them.
I will keep Dale and all the Family in my prayers.
Dear Chrysler family,
I have many great memories of Dale, the first of which was him showing us his ham radio operation when I was in school, then as a parent of Dan and the rest of the Chrysler family at Lourdes, and finally as a colleague and friend at Mayo. In his years of retirement, I remember how much I enjoyed visiting with Dale in his volunteer role as I would walk the various halls of Mayo. As a Mayo administrative colleague, he was always a consummate professional and gentleman, supporting younger administrators and never seeking the limelight for himself.
I am sure all of you have great memories of this wonderful man. Please know all of you are in my thoughts and prayers.
Marian,
We are down at Charlie's in St. Louis for Thanksgiving. We read of Dales death and extend our thoughts and prayers to you and your family. We expect Jamer Kelley will check in and extend our wishes.
Best to all,
I am so saddened to hear of Dale's passing. I have known him for many years, working with him at Mayo Clinic. As an administrator, he always encouraged me as I pursued changes in my job roles and career at Mayo. He was a friend and mentor. He always had an ear to listen, a smile to make you happy, and a warm heart. I have missed seeing him the past few years as a volunteer at Mayo.
My most heartfelt condolences to all the family. I hope your memories will bring you strength through this difficult time.
My deepest sympathies.
Dale was a gentle man who was grateful for the things that put a smile on life. Some years ago he would give us some plants from his garden and, of course then we had to add more gardens for ourselves. We think we're thankful for that...
For Dale's family we send you our sympathy and prayers. You worked together to make life as comfortable as you could for him. Dementia can change personalities, and if that was true for Dale, you handled it beautifully. You can rest, knowing that he is at peace and celebrating his new life.
Our sympathy, Joe and Elaine
My sincere sympathies to the family of Dale Chrysler. I had the great fortune to work with Dale at Mayo Clinic, when I was an Administrative Assistant in the Division of Administrative Services. I had to smile when I read the obituary and the comment about growing tomatoes. The first thing I thought of when I heard that he had passed was what a nice guy he was and that he brought me a tomatoe plant to work (some 25-30 years ago). I will not forget his kind spirit. His family can be proud. My sincere sympathy.
