Mrs. Culp, 90, of Rochester, MN., died Saturday (June 29, 2013) at her home.
Vieno was born January 12, 1923 in Duluth, MN to Isaac (Katajamaki) Hill and Ester (Wallio) Hill. She graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1940. From 1940-1941 she attended the College of St. Scholastica, Duluth, MN. In fall of 1941, Vieno was old enough to be accepted into the Kahler School of Nursing in Rochester, MN. After graduation in 1944 as a RN, she enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps with basic training at Fort Carson, Colorado. Her assignment after basic, was at Schick Army Hospital in Clinton, Iowa. Here she met and married Dr. Clyde E. Culp. During Clyde’s tour of duty in the Pacific, Vieno returned to Duluth and worked as a nurse at St. Mary’s Hospital. Upon his return, the couple lived in Moscow, Idaho from 1947-1958, when they moved to Rochester, MN so her husband could further his medical training in the Mayo Graduate Fellowship Program. Subsequently, Clyde was asked to join the Mayo Clinic Staff in 1962. Upon retirement, they split their time between their Mississippi River home near Wabasha and Gold Canyon, AZ. In 2000, they returned to reside in Rochester.
Vieno remained active in the Kahler School of Nursing Alumni Association, serving as President in 1968-1969. She also became very active in the Minnesota Medical Association Alliance, serving as President in 1976-1977. During this term, one of her accomplishments was the distribution of two thousand Heimlich maneuver posters throughout Minnesota. She also served on the Salvation Army Board and was member of P.E.O., Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile.
Survivors include her husband, Clyde, two daughters, Cathy (Bill) Stecker of Hillsboro, NC and Christine, PH.D. of Spokane, WA, son, Kurt (Jill) of Rochester, daughter-in-law, Cathy Diessner Culp of Temple, Texas; fourteen grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her son, Kim S. Culp, M.D.
Vieno loved being a wife, mother and her husband’s best friend. She also became an accomplished artist with water colors, pastels and pencil.
Memorials are preferred to the Methodist-Kahler Nursing Alumni Association.
Macken Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. On-line condolences are welcome at www.mackenfuneralhome.com.
Condolences
The family of Vieno Esther Culp has received the following condolences.
Dear Dr. Culp, Kurt, Jill and family,
Although we did not know your wife and mother personally, I know that you and your family loved and cared for her very much and it showed in everything you did for Vieno.
Our thoughts are with you each day.
Revelee and Steve Kaplan
Dear Dr. Culp and family, I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.
My thoughts and prayers go out to the Culp family as you deal with your loss. It seems as if those whom we have known and loved in our youth are leaving us for a better place.
I have such fond memories of the Culps, especially after you moved to MN and would drive all day and night to make it to McGarveys cabin. There were all the Culp kids to play with and the adults were always laughing and telling stories. We have home movies of Clyde & Vi, Leo & Mildred, my parents and others sharing fun and laughter. Every time we would show those movies, my Mom would always say what a great time she had with those people.
Thanks for the great memories, Vi. I am sure there is a party in heaven with the McGarveys and the Dinsmores, just to name a few. God bless you and your family.
Dear Clyde, We are sorry to learn of the death of your dear wife, Vieno. You have our deepest sympathy. Sincerely, Jim and Claire Abbott Wabasha
Clyde & Family,
Both Kathy and I thought so much of Vi, she was always an excellent Host. We were both glad that she got to spend time with the Grand Children there in Rochester. Hope to see you soon Clyde.
Roger & Kathy Root
I'm glad I had the chance to meet Vi and you to talk about the Cadet Nurses. My sympathies to you and your family.
