Cecil “Baldy” Long

Cecil Robert Long, age 88 of Rochester passed away at his residence on June 25, 2013.

He was born on December 4, 1924 in rural Olmsted County to Samuel and Maude Long. After attending Simpson School, Baldy served in the US Navy during WWII in the Philippines. On October 26, 1943 he married Dorothy Grace Evenson in St. Louis just prior to his deployment. Baldy worked for O.A. Stocke Construction Company for 40 years. He and Dorothy co-owned the Pla-mor Ballroom in Rochester with his brother Lloyd (Laura) from 1974 to 2006. While he and Dorothy raised their 13 children, Baldy always had time to tell a quick story, or help anyone in need. He would have given the shirt off his back if anyone needed it. Baldy held firm to his own opinions, and made sure that people knew it.

He is survived by his wife Dorothy, his children: Robert of Kasson, Kenneth of Rochester, Wayne (Mary) of Newport News, VA, Merle (Gloria) of Rochester, Warren (Nancy) of Blue Earth, MN, Kathryn (Jeff) Dickhut of Minnetonka, MN, Susan of Rochester, Sam of Rochester, Donna (Mark) Olson of Laughlin, NV, Gary of Rochester, Roger (Debra) of Manhattan, MT; siblings: Lloyd of Rochester, Leila Ross of Port Arthur, TX and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, two daughters, Geraldine and Debra Long, five brothers and one sister.

A funeral service for Baldy will be held at 11:00AM on Monday, July 1, 2013 at the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 3:00PM to 6:00PM on Sunday, June 30, 2013 in the River Park Chapel at Macken Funeral Home, and one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens. Military Honors will be provided by American Legion Post 92.

Condolences

The family of Cecil “Baldy” Long has received the following condolences.

My thoughts are with the Long children today.  We were so lucky to have such a wonderful family with so many awesome kids to play with on 7th Avenue Northwest.  I think of you all fondly and know how great your parents were because of the kindness of you all!

Hi Grandpa!  I'm so sorry I wasn't able to see you for so long before you passed on.  I always thought about you and whenever I did, I smiled.  I still have the wooden nickel you gave me, as well as the handkerchief.  I loved your sense of humor, the way you didn't put up with anybody's crap, your work ethic, your accent and your potty mouth. :)  You were an amazing man and did a lot with your life.  I wish I could be there to say goodbye to you.  And I'm especially sorry you were not able to go before Grandma. I knew that is what you wished, but God had other plans.  I hope you and he have lots of good talks and drink lots of great coffee.

Thank you for being my Grandpa.

Love,

Tess
