Rodney “Rod” W. Walters
A Mass of Christian burial for Rod Walters will be held on Friday, August 21, 2009, at 10:30AM, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 11 – 4th Ave. SW, in Rochester with Father John Lasuba celebrating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
Friends and relatives may visit from 5:00 to 8:00 PM on Thursday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, and one hour prior to the service at the Church on Friday
Rodney Wiltsey Walters died early morning Tuesday, August 18, 2009 at Golden Living Center–Rochester West. Rod was born in Meriden, Minn., September 19, 1926 to Floyd and Norma (Wiltsey) Walters. Since 1936 he has lived in Rochester. He attended Rochester schools and graduated from Rochester High School in 1944. He married Betty Jane Orlowski May 18, 1948 at Hyacinth’s Church, Owatonna, Minn. and they resided in Rochester all of their married life. Betty is a retired Mayo Clinic employee.
He was employed by the Chicago Northwestern Railroad for fifteen years. On July 6, 1959 he entered the Olmsted County Sheriff’s Department. He served there twenty-seven years, the last fifteen as Chief Deputy. He retired January 31, 1987.
Rod was an avid Minnesota sports fan, enjoyed summer family vacations at the lake and winters in Hawaii, but his true passion was his family. He was a sixty-year member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, member of Rochester Eagles, and a Life Member and past trustee of Rochester Elks Lodge.
Rod is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Betty; three children–Terry (Teri Wintering) of Wabasha, Greg (Joyce) of Rochester, and Denise (Mark) Marino of Clearwater, Minn.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by brother and sister-in-law, Emery and Linda Walters of Rochester, and sister-in-law, Mary Eileen Orlowski of Austin.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Norman.
Memorials may be sent either to the Walters Family Scholarship Fund, in care of Lourdes Foundation or the Lourdes High School Building Our Future Fund.
